What is it?

09/19/2010 10:45 AM

My grandson found this and he just won't let up. he wants to know what it is.

I told him you all would know.

  • Its steel
  • Its about 3/16" thick
  • It has a flat side that is rough
  • The letters BAE and an "ARROW" are plainly seen on this flat side
  • one the other side it has smooth surface with a beveled edge all around coming down all the way

WHAT IS IT?

There will be no rest in this house until he knows............................

Thats a cam washer used for frond end alignments of vehicles. The sae reinforces that and the arrow shows the relative position, just did my own on a 2009 dodge truck with a tape measure and level. Woody

You must work on tropical vehicles.

They would be the only ones I am aware of with "frond" ends.

Hello Waldig, and welcome to the 'pond'. Great, fast answer.

I hope we see you around often.

Kind regards ...

I do not recognize this object so I can only offer speculations. My initial speculation hang on the idea that this is some kind of a weight, possibly for drapery but not a calibrated weight. By having a D hole instead of a circular hole and the direction of an arrow, what ever this is it has a alignment characteristic. I also think the corrosion happening on only one side as a clue. Possibly this is a support washer that rested against a flat surface on the beveled side. It looks like a locking clip washer held it onto the D shaped post. Maybe this is an alignment washer of a brake assembly.

Well that's my guess.

Good Luck

Yes, waldig is right on - but depending on your grandson's age, you might want to convince him that he found a rare Spanish dabloon from a hidden treasure chest. It can be your little secret between yourselves for a year or two, until he learns about car parts. - Heck; when he finds out what it really is, after hoarding the "valuable booty" carefully away for a while - he may actually take an interest in mechanics.

0r maybe the complete opposite

Hopefully you (or someone else) have not given the boy an auto tool kit as a gift!

And your tools are hidden away.

Me????? Jack my own vehicle up????? For this thread???? Nope. You give me too much credit.

I rubbed some black stuff on my truck this week end, but, that's about the extent of my vehicular activity, except for flying down the road.

I plagiarized that picture from some web site.

We have three boys living with us permanently. 4, 6 and 11 years old.

That's enough hobby for anyone, espacially one who is 63 years old himself.

My wife and I both work full time, too.

I did the bed rails early in the morning, before any of my helpers were awake.

You want to talk about tools disappearing, I can write a book.

Cheers.

I hear ya there! Ive got two boys myself, 3 and 11, and my daughter (soon to be 15) acts more like a boy than most boys do Granted Im half your age but, they still definately keep me running. They are fun projects, though

Amen to that. my friend!

My mother always taught me: "Learn to read and read to learn."

I have learned more, reading on my own than any of the school instruction that I have paid so much for. In my house reading is taught almost as a virtue

While cleaning out my uncle's tool box, I found a half dozen of these. I had figured it was some sort of shim. Interesting to finally find out what they are.

I'm now curious as to what the BAE stamp is, as the parts from the tool box also had the same letters stamped into them.

On an interesting side note, my uncle was an auto mechanic in his early years; was trained during WWII on airplane engines. Got to test run some of the army's first jet engines. But the really interesting coincidence is that when he retired, one of his hobbies was making nets!

At one time, crocheting and net making ( small dip nets and cast nets) were used by some psych wards to relieve stress on patients. Oddly, it was used in some VA hospitals too. The hand , eye coordination makes it necessary to concentrate just on that.

Decades ago, I mentioned this to my paw , a WWII marine sargeant and combat vet from the island hopping campaign.......he said the splicing fid would make a good shiv if it were a little longer and had some kind of rough grip so it wouldn't get so slippery after it was 'used'.

Jarheads, you gotta' love 'em!
