Why is High Voltage Used in Distribution System?

10/25/2010 11:17 AM

normally generation voltage 11kv , but we step up 33 kv and then use 33 /6.6kv and 6.6/415 v.please suggestion me.

To reduce the current. With lower current, thinner cable can be used, saving $$$.

I agree with Mr.John D & would like to add some points. (1) If the power is transmitted by Over Head Conductors it will lead to less Tower Weight ( not in tower height ), Less heating of the conductor, less amount of sag ,less voltage drop for given load ,better voltage regulation at the sending end etc.

Thank you once again for your straightforward answer to the question presently on our plate! I only hope that the OP will once again 'get 'it'.

And also, once again - Administration - why do these kind of threads keep continually appearing on the 'General Section' of CR4, and not reassigned, to as in this case, - the 'Electrical Engineering' section?

Please go back to keeping the "General" interest section just what that term 'general' means - 'GENERAL INTEREST' - and not topic specific.

I moved it to the electrical engineering section. We try to catch these, but don't always get to them right away.

Moderators can do that stuff.

I didn't realise that Altair was a moderator with so few posts to date.

Also, with lower current, the less loss due to cable resistance.

Re: Why is High Voltage Used in Distribution System?

The electrical generating stations are situated ( Hydro electric , thermal, gas or nuclear generation ) far away from load centers and have to carry large quanty of energy through very long distances and need long transmission lines and if transmitted at the generating voltage will result in large transmission loss as the loss is proportional to the square of current,. So to reduce transmission loss, the voltage is stepped up depending up on the distance and quantum of power to be transmitted. The transmisson voltages are 400 kV, 220 kV, 110 kV, 66 kV, 33kv depending on the loss of energy and economic considerations.
