Air Rifles and the Law? UK

Do any target members know what laws are relevant to owning and carrying in public air rifles in the U.K, i would like to purchase one and shoot some targets with my nephews.

when i was a kid it didn't matter, but i saw in a local newspaper someone was arrested for having an air riffle in their car.
