Favorite Movie Lines

12/17/2010 3:58 PM

I was watching a Dirty Harry movie the other night. His "do you feel lucky, punk?" line got me thinking about some of my other favorite movie lines.

1. "You're going to need a bigger boat." Jaws.

2. "I don't have time to bleed." Terminator.

3. "Damn! We're in a tight spot." O Brother Where Art Thou.

4. "Oh, I don't know, just kinda funny lookin." Fargo.

5. "What hump?" Young Frankenstein.

You guys care to add your own?

I used one of my favorites within one of Milo's blogs the other day:

"Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!"

This is the often quoted adulterated version of the actual line from the book and subsequent film The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Great film.

Re: Favorite movie lines

Not that it gets used much but I've always liked "Klaatu Barada Nikto."

Then there is always:

"We don' need no steenkin' badges!" Treasure of the Sierra Madre

"I'm shocked - shocked - that there is gambling going on in this establishment." Casablanca

"The stuff dreams are made of." Maltese Falcon

"Don't get cocky, kid." Star Wars

"Our dreams are like our children." My Fellow Americans

And for my special lady, "As you wish." Princess Bride

Just to nitpick, I think the line is "what we have here is: failure to communicate", although it is almost always quoted the way you did.

Another often quoted line is "play it again, Sam" from Casablanca. This line is never spoken in the movie

The "Play it again Sam" quote is most often attributed to Bogart.

Speaking of the great Leslie Nielson: In response to "Surely, you can't be serious" ... "Yes I am, and don't call me Shirley."

And here are a few more of my favourites:

God bless us everyone - Tiny Tim in A Christmas Carol

I'll be back - The Terminator

Oh behave! - Austin Powers

Beam me up Scotty - Another one of those lines that is oft quoted but was never actually said

I'm a doctor, not a ________ - Dr. McCoy in Star Trek (Fill in the blank with a number of different options)

Foozball is the devil! - Kathy Bates as Bobby Boucher's mother in The Waterboy

Here endeth the lesson - Elliot Ness in The Untouchables

Cornelius reading from the sacred scrolls of the apes.

Beware the beast Man, for he is the Devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him; drive him back into his jungle lair, for he is the harbinger of death.

And from Debbie Does Dallas, " Hi, how are you doing?"

It's not a 'dirty' movie. It's an action film about a San Francisco cop with a big gun and bigger attitude.

I never saw "Debbie Does Dallas" either, but I saw some of the sequels...

"Debbie Does Boston"

"Debbie Does Los Angeles"

"Debbie Does Texas"

"Debbie Does Asia"

and then there was the last one "Debbie Can't Do It No More"

In reality, many years ago, I had a video distribution business. I occasionally had to watch X rated movies, paying attention to the quality of the tape, rather than the contents of the movie. Now that was a challenge.

1st soldier with a keen interest in birds: It's not a question of where he grips it! It's a simple question of weight ratios! A five ounce bird could not carry a one pound coconut.

King Arthur: Well, it doesn't matter. Will you go and tell your master that Arthur from the Court of Camelot is here?

1st soldier with a keen interest in birds: Listen. In order to maintain air-speed velocity, a swallow needs to beat its wings forty-three times every second, right?

King Arthur: Please!

I like these:

"Hombre" - Richard Boone to Paul Newman (Hombre), "Mister, you got a lotta hard bark on you, comin' down here like that".

"Braveheart" - When he is about to be disembowelled and asked to acknowledge the King of England, "FREEDOM!".

Great Topic ... FUN

"Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no substitute for a good blaster at your side." -- Han Solo from Star Wars episode IV

Grant: "Steve, you know what this is don't you?…It's a Time Space Warp!"

Steve: "I'm not sure I know exactly what that is."

Grant: "I don't suppose anybody really does."

-- The Day Time Ended

"Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy. Without precise calculations we could fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova, and that'd end your trip real quick, wouldn't it?" -- Han Solo from Star Wars episode IV

"You've never heard of the Millennium Falcon? She's the ship that made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs. She's fast enough for you, old man." -- Han Solo from Star Wars episode IV

"Here's Johnny!" -- The Shining

"Yes they float Georgie, they float, they all float down here Georgie and you will too!!!" -- Pennywise from IT

"I'm lookin' at a tin star with a drunk pinned to it." -- John Wayne from El Dorado

[okay, that's enough or I won't get anything done today ]

Kind regards ...

Best line ever.

Michael Rapaport, the bad cop in "29 Palms" has just cuffed Rachael Leigh Cook and he's got her bent over the hood of her car and he puts his hand up her skirt and he says;

"You got a nice ass, remind me to do something about that later."

Priceless.

Re: Favorite Movie Lines

12/18/2010 12:52 PM

Well, I found the exact quote that I liked from the movie "hero" with Dustin Hoffman, but it's a bit different than I remember:

"You remember when I said how I was gonna explain about life, buddy? Well the thing about life is, it gets weird. People are always talking ya about truth. Everybody always knows what the truth is, like it was toilet paper or somethin', and they got a supply in the closet. But what you learn, as you get older, is there ain't no truth. All there is is bullsh-t, pardon my vulgarity here. Layers of it. One layer of bullsh-t on top of another. And what you do in life like when you get older is, you pick the layer of bullsh-t that you prefer and that's your bullsh-t, so to speak."

I was a bit disappointed.

In my mind, I remember: "life is like a bullsh-t onion. You just keep peeling back the bullsh-t until you get a layer that you're comfortable with"

Well, here's the whole song. More than one sentence but quiet poignant. Favorite? Some times, lesser buy the day although one has to watch ones back.

Re: Favorite Movie Lines

While I'm at it.

And what'll you do now, my blue-eyed son ?

And what'll you do now my darling young one ?

I'm a-goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a-fallin'

I'll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest

Where the people are a many and their hands are all empty

Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters

Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison

Where the executioner's face is always well hidden

Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten

Where black is the color, where none is the number

And I'll tell and think it and speak it and breathe it

And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it

Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin'

But I'll know my songs well before I start singin'

And it's a hard, it's a hard,

it'sa hard, and it's a hard

It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Bob Dylon

More than 40 bloody years later! What a poet!

Okay, WAY off topic, but I had to share ...

In 1970, the draft was controlled by the lottery. I remember the day (although the date slips my mind) of that year's selections ... I was with several of my buddies watching the TV as numbers were called. My birthday got number 303 ... they would call women and children before they got to my number. Marcus, my friend sitting next to me got number 5. He literally cried.

He didn't go to Viet Nam, but instead he ended up stationed in Germany, where he unfortunately became an addict ... one never knows which bullets one will be dodging.

Reasonably happy endings, though ... the last I heard from Marcus he is 'better' and leading a normal life, whatever that is.

Kind regards ...

Mel Gibson as Lt. Col. Hal Moore in "We Were Soldiers Once, and Young"; "I promise you this, I will be the first man on the field of battle and the last man off". That is leadership from the front.

Same movie; "You learn the job of the person above you and teach yours to the one below you, because when it all goes to hell, we're all we've got".

A Bugs Life; "This is nothing, remember the twig of '82". When a leaf fell in their path. The rest of the bugs needed a leader who wasn't phased by an obstacle to their task. Our families and those we are responsible for need us to help them learn how to meet and deal with the obstacles of life and business.

My Cousin Vinnie (1992)

Vinny Gambini: [Vinny hears a drip in the motel bathroom] Weren't you the last one to use the bathroom?
Lisa: So?
Vinny Gambini: Well, did you use the faucet?
Lisa: Yeah.
Vinny Gambini: Then why didn'tcha turn it off?
Lisa: I DID turn it off!
Vinny Gambini: Well, if you turned it off, why am I listening to it?
Lisa: Did it ever occur to you it could be turned off AND drip at the same time?
Vinny Gambini: No. Because if you'd turned it off, it wouldn't drip!
Lisa: Maybe it's broken.
Vinny Gambini: Is that what you're saying? It's broken?
Lisa: Yeah. That's it, it's broken.
Vinny Gambini: You sure?
Lisa: I'm positive.
Vinny Gambini: Maybe you didn't twist it hard enough.
Lisa: I twisted it just right.
Vinny Gambini: How could you be so sure?
Lisa: [sighs] If you will look in the manual, you will see that this particular model faucet requires a range of 10 to 16 foot-pounds of torque. I routinely twist the maximum allowable torquage.
Vinny Gambini: Well, how could you be sure you used 16 foot-pounds of torque?
Lisa: Because I used a Craftsman model 1019 Laboratory Edition Signature Series torque wrench. The kind used by Caltech high energy physicists. And NASA engineers.
Vinny Gambini: Well, in that case, how can you be sure THAT's accurate?
Lisa: Because a split second before the torque wrench was applied to the faucet handle, it had been calibrated by top members of the state AND federal Department of Weights and Measures... to be dead on balls accurate!
[She rips a page out of a magazine and hands it to him]
Lisa: Here's the certificate of validation.
Vinny Gambini: Dead on balls accurate?
Lisa: It's an industry term.
Vinny Gambini: [tosses paper away] I guess the f___ing thing is broken.
