Metal to Metal Adhesive

03/28/2007 8:01 PM

I've been looking for a strong adhesive, one that creates a bond as close to a weld as I can get, to attach aluminum to aluminum, steel to aluminum and steel to steel. What do you suggest?

Thanks.

A metal loaded epoxy resin. Use the correct filler to suit your metals. Roughen the mating surfaces and clean with a good degreaser, wear plastic gloves when bonding sonas to keep both you and the work pieces clean.

I would recommend trying J-B Weld. It is available at most hardware / home improvement stores, its cheap, and I've had success using it in the past.

Good Luck

Thanks BrainWave,

I've had very good luck using J-B Weld, I particularly like how well it holds up under shear forces. Have you tried the "KWIK" version? Not as strong as the original, but if time is of the essence, it bonds in about 5 minutes or so.

J-B Weld doesn't hold well enough.

There is an aircraft adhesive used on helicopters. they actually use it instead of welds and rivets because the joint is structurally stronger. contact your local airport and talk to the aircraft fitters.

I used to use such a product it was a two part epoxy resin with a micro fine aluminium filler (Metal set) it cost a large fortune. All things aero do it is the triplicate paper work. (release forms CAA requirements).

PlbMak beat me to the punch, but he is on the money with the Plexus kudo. They make an incredible array of adhesives for bonding a broad spectrum of similar and dissimilar materials. Note that for bonding metals an etching/primer precoat will probably be preferred.

Another similar manufacturer is Master Bond (http://www.masterbond.com). Wide array of adhesives and excellent technical support.

A simple degreaser which works in most situations where you have nothing else is Methylated Spirits. Pick the clear, uncoloured version as a first choice.

Check the instructions of the bonding agent that this is acceptable. Meths dissappears in a normal room temperature quite quickly and the vapours are lighter than air and dissapate also from the atmosphere and do not collect in depressions on the floor.

If the metals are really dirty, scrub them with washing up liquid and water first (before cleaning with meths), wash off well to remove all traces of the washing up liquid! If the components are not too large, a full cycle in a washing up machine can also be advantageous!

NEVER try using petroleum products of any type. They leave residues and heavy inflammable vapours.

When making the joint behave as though you are a surgeon, performing an operation on a live patient, hygene rules!

Make sure that the design pulls against the whole joining material (from the middle of the bonding agent used) and not just against one edge as possible "peeling" could occurr. Think the mecahnics thru properly before starting.

The advice from all the other participants would appear to be first class (as usual!).

Metal to metal adhesive. Andy Germany gives useful prep information. KeyPolymer Epoxy E-12 A/B is an excellent adhesive which is flexible when cured, can be heat cured and has worked well in Mass Transit in the U.S.A. Key Polymer, Lawrence, MA. USA

Well first whenever you are structurally bonding aluminum to anything you should do some sort of surface treatment. This could be done as follows from this pdf

http://www.cytec.com/business/engineeredmaterials/Datasheets/BR%20127%20Primer.pdf

this is the product that we generally use. As far as adhesives we have had very good luck with the hysol product line. A good all purpose adhesive is the hysol ea 9395 adhesive they also have an aluminum based adhesive which I believe is ea 9309-3na. Hope this helps.

The JB Weld mentioned is able to bond to any metal with the minimum of prep work required even grease poses little difficulty. I have used it and had good sucess even when just a quick wipe down was all I did to make the surface clean.
