Help Identify the Steam Trap

02/04/2011 9:00 AM

Can anyone help identify this steam trap. We have received the picture from a customer whose factory is in the middle of the bush and he needs spare parts for this.

Please help as we are stuck.

Look Here:

It might be a variation of one of these.

Are there any letters or numbers in the casting?

It is clearly a ball float / thermostatic steam trap that I know but I have never seen one with 2 inlets and 2 outlets. There are no markings on it so I am a bit in the dark.

Wait a minute!

"2 inlets and 2 outlets."

This may not be a "Stream Trap at all. It may be some sort of a

Heat Exchanger" possibly a Graham Heliflow or equal.

I think that Penn is correct. If this were a "pressure powered pump" as some suggest that it might be, it would have a smaller diameter motive pressure line as well as a vent/balance line fitting at the top of the casting. It clearly hasn't and hence, it's unlikely that this is a PPP. My bet is on it being a HX.

OP: If you're still stuck, ask your customer for more pictures taken from different perspectives and, have him provide you with the name plate data! Nobody can be expected to quote a repair kit for an unknown item. Even if you knew what it is, there may be various models of this item. Without specifics, you could provide a component which doesn't fit and the customer would probably expect you to take it back at your cost

Yes it is a float/thermostatic steam trap. It appears to have 3 (somewhat fuzzy) connections not 4. If it is truly 3 and not an elbow hidden behind something else it is probably an inlet, an outlet and a drain. Drains are often piped in if there is a persistent problem with the piping, the trap or some other unit in the piping circuit. it is much easier to open a valve to drain the system, let off pressure, etc. than it is to break a union or cut the piping. Often done after you have had one of these have a problem and you had to remove the drain plug while there was hot condensate within the trap. All it takes is one burn to convince you that you never want to have to do it again!

Good Luck, old salt

Could it be a steam driven pump I have installed these before and they look like a large F&T trap, if memory serves me?

Double inlet/double outlet F&T trap is applicable to all type of steam heating systems and steam process equipment where straight through piping is required. This would be the best start to repair or replacement.
