Metal Ringing Sound From Hero Honda CBZ's Engine.

02/14/2011 11:41 PM

I have a 2001 model 156cc Hero Honda CBZ bike. I have observed that the engine gives out a ringing sound (feels like one metal part is drumming on another- periodic with the engine rpm), which is quite profound when the load on the engine increases (ie when i don't shift down the gear when vehicle slows down or climbs a steep)... some of my friends say that it is the TAPPET NOISE... Can that be a reason?.. btw.. what does tappet noise exactly mean?.. what could be the other possible reasons??.. also, how can i rectify them?

Could it be a cell phone hidden in the seat?

Diagnosing a ringing sound by e-mail from around the world is not an exact science you are aware, right?

The best suggestion I can offer is to try to put a foot against the exhaust heat shield when the noise is present. Next guess would be the exhaust pipe/muffler. Lean a foot against that next. Any Thin sheet metal part might vibrate if not supported, or mounted loose. Try tapping any part of the bike you can reach and listening for the noise. Good luck. If needed we can send lynlynch there to help you look.

Click and Clack, the "Tappet Brothers," would surely know all about this. By searching under www.npr.com, you can probably find a number and call them up some fine Saturday during the "Car Talk" show.

Thanks to both of you for the replies!

And bob... i keep things only in the place assigned to them.. not like cell phones or laptops hidden in seats.. like how few smugglers do...or something like that...btw thats not the issue here...

And i didn't open up my bike's engine before posting this thread, hoping bob would get the diagnosis right... where a million possibilities exist for a million problems to occur, i'm trying to gather as much information as possible, from knowledgable gurus over here, so as to get an idea of the various approaches i could use to sort out this problem... anyways thanks for ur inputs!..

And i never wish to escape from my responsibilities by making lynlynch get my problems solved!.. ;-)

Inputs through this site would suffice,

ultimately,

Knowledge Matters!

Have a look in your toolkit. Try your mechanics toolkit. See if anything is missing. I know you are a tidy person and not a smuggler of rattly metal objects. But maybe, maybe....

You need not admit if this was the case. Good luck, Ky.

The tappet is the thing that bears against the end of the valve stem to push the valve open. There is normally a very small gap when the valve is closed and the engine is cold, to ensure that the valve closes fully (even if the valve stem expands with increasing engine temperature). If the gap is too big, the tappet hammers against the valve stem and makes an audible sound.

Fix by re-setting the gap (refer to workshop manual or someone who knows how).

Another possibility is pre-ignition (also known as "pinking" or "knocking") - have you changed the fuel recently? Maybe using a mix with more ethanol? I don't know whether this would cause pinking - just thinking aloud really.

Some shaft seals such as at the drive sprocket shaft have metal shields or dust covers, one may have backe out and is spinning on the shaft and will give a metallic ringing with changing shaft speeds.

If this model were equipped with a radio, I'd just tell you to turn up the volume.

Do you have headphones and an i-Pod?

I marked myself OT.

Re: Metal Ringing Sound From Hero Honda CBZ's Engine.

It sounds like you might be getting "pinging" or "knocking" since it only occurs under heavy load. Some possible fixes include using a higher octane fuel, or using a richer fuel/air mix. Another possibility is that you're getting preignition (pre-firing before normal spark ignition). This can be due to using a spark plug that is too "hot", or from carbon deposits on the head or piston. Either pinging or preignition causes internal shock waves (that you hear as a metallic pinging sound). If not fixed, either can damage or even destroy the engine.

It could also be a wrong spark plug, one that is physically too long and the piston is hitting it.....

When I first started to pollute this site, there was a problem with a Ford pick up that had a rattle at low engine speeds. After many guesses, it turned out that the dealership had dropped an exhaust bolt into the exhaust pipe when they had serviced the clutch.

I'm just saying, it could happen again.

Thanks Andy and Bert!.. I ll check the spark plug for problems.. But.. at the same time i do not find any other symptoms of pre-ignition (like power fluctuation or so). Thanks for your info..

And Bob.. Good to have that input... but i checked all visible bolts on the outside, and found things to be good... anyways i ll recheck all possible connections...

And Ky... i ll be happy to admit my mistakes.. coz my aim is to learn something out of all these conversations (meant about automobiles and nt abt arguing).. and regarding the FINGERS u showed me through that image...

I take the THUMB and u take the rest, specially the MIDDLE one!

You got that all wrong with the fingers. When we do that we wish someone good luck and hope all goes well. I meant no harm with showing the picture, at all.

I'll take it, Ky.

I gave that comment when i felt that i am being bullied by you!

Sorry once again!

I can confirm that Ky was genuine - it's a widely-used bit of Western superstition.

Thank you John...

And Ky, the problem was with my perception.. not with what you did... so I guess you were right and careful this time even...

I was aware of this cross-finger custom even before... but the initial impression that i caught out of it went the other way!

Anyways.. Sorry again for what has happened!
