Corrosion Rate of Carbon Steel Plate

04/10/2007 8:46 AM

Does anyone know where I can get some data on the corrosion rates for carbon steel plate? Specifically the corrosion rate in water with approx. 6 ppm chlorides.

Corrosion rate depends also on the acidity and the oxygen content of the water, which in tuen depend on a number of things not least of which is temperature. The composition and mechanical history of the steel is another factor, as are the metals with which it is in contact and the state of agitation of the fluid(s) in contact with them. The levels of settleable solids in the water will also have an influence, as will the levels of easily-precipitated species like the calcium and magnesium carbonates, barium suphate, silica and a couple of awkward fluorides, most of which can be kept at bay by suitable additives.

Sounds like some research on water treatment for steam boilers is required?

you can seal off corrosion tendencies of 6ppm Chloride loaded water using:

  • Chemically binding the chloride elsewhere than attacking Steel
  • Painting,Coating,Epoxy on the Steel wetted surface
  • pH/Redox correction of the water
  • Cathodic Protection.

Doubtful if you can get such a report.

Seawater -maybe. But sea water is not 6ppm -more like 6000+ppm Cl.

Try ASME BPV Code Sec VIII Div 1/2- Design. I think it specifies 1 mm p.a.

For full detail on corrosion between metallic materials located at corrosive fluids, please refer to Hand Book "Corrosion Data Survey", Metal Section published by NACE.

NACE : National Association of Corrosion Engineers, 1440 South Creek Drive, Houston, Texas 77084, USA. Library of Congress Catalog Card Number : 84-62018, ISBN 0-915567-07-5.

Dear Nachi

The ASME Code doesn't specify a fixed value for the amount of corrosion for any material because this (in simple) depends on type of material, type of corrosive, temperature,.... etc.

Only, the ASME BPV Code asked their users to take into consideration that corrosion if exists.

I think it's necessary to have more data to give you a real figure for corrosion rate. It depends on water chemistry, pressure, temperature, CO2? content.. and so on.

For what i know 6 ppm of Chlorides does not give any kind of information.

regards
