Is there a transmitter to find lost tools?

04/10/2007 10:10 AM

Is there a small transmitter available that is shock proof and waterproof that could be fixed on a tool eg a shifter or tube cutters etc. It would need to have a range of 100m and be received by a item such as the size of a mobile phone and which would point to direction of misplaced tool therefore leading you to it. This device could be activated when leaving a job and if something was left somewhere it could be retrieved. I seem to spend a lot of time looking for misplaced tools often not finding them and in this day and age there must be something available that would do this at a reasonable cost?

The people you should ask are those who track small animals or vehicle locators.

There are probably hundreds of designs out there if you google for an answer.

The othe route is the hidden bug brigade. All you need is a fairly simple two transistor circuit. Try looking at electronics magazines for ads.

I'm thinking of a GPS transplant for members of my staff. That way I can track there movements over the course of a day and retrieve my tools.

Just bulk buy phones with GPS units and rent them out.

Didn't we do this the other day? I liked the idea of the RF tag epoxied to the tools, but I think the range was the issue with it. If you RF tagged the tools and then read the tool box before leaving the job site, at least you would know something was missing before you got back to the shop or went to the next job site. If you really wanted the 100m range, I wouldn't think a small transmitter would be too difficult - the ham radio guys are always doing those T-hunts and they could get very crafty with their transmitters, though it usually all home-brew stuff - I don't recall ever hearing of an off-the-shelf T-hunt transmitter, though I'm sure if you checked the Ham magazines you'd be surprised.

RFID at a hundred meters thats some reader you have found, I thought the whole idea was to keep things local like about 12" 300mm.

The device you need was invented many years ago. It is call Mother, or Mom and they are great for finding lost things, cleaning up and attempting to train young male minds in the art of tidiness.

In my case it didn't quite work but it was a valiant effort.

It is being done in SA in mines mainly to track expensive safety equipment. Preventing entry without and warn for missing instruments when leaving.

A big antenna is used, the range obtained is then only about 1 m.

At this stage the cost of such a system will exceed the savings for normal tool replacement.

A special designed toolbox formed to fit the required tools may be serve the purpose better.
