Asteroid 2005 YU55

05/31/2011 10:38 AM

asteroid 2005 YU55, a round mini-world that is about 1,300 feet "65 miles in diameter." In early November, this asteroid will approach Earth within 0.85 lunar distances. Because of its size and proximity to Earth, the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Mass., has designated the space rock as a "potentially hazardous asteroid. The asteroid will approach from the south. "space.com" "2005 YU55" will be close.................

Yes, it's been discussed here before. If you do a search on all of CR4 for YU55 you'll see some of the previous discussions.

.......and it's only recently that observation techniques have become sufficiently advanced to be able to detect them, whereas things like this have been going on for millions of years without being noticed.

The point of the original post is....?

Hurtling thru space at tens of thousands of miles per hour.

400 Meters in Diameter, thats huge. That is 1355 feet. That is about 30% bigger then the Asteroid Apophis. To put that in perspective - layout a grid of 16 square football fields each 100 yards by 100 Yards. Now connect them all in a square and put this Asteroid in the center and you would not see any of thoes football fields.

If it did hit us? Well I read an estimate on Apophis being something like the equivalent of 65,000 Atomic bombs so lets call this one an even 100,000 atomic bombs hitting all in one place at one time……

But according to NASA it will pass within 0.85 lunar distances from the Earth on November 8, 2011. NO IMPACT!! The closest approach to Earth and the Moon will be respectively 0.00217 AU and 0.00160 AU on 2011 November 8 at 23:28 and November 9 at 07:13 UT.

*ALOT* of people are ignorant, lazy, and self-centered these days.I thought that maybe this little post could wake up a few. If not on this asteroid, who knows maybe themselves...Å

The first four digits of that asteroid is the date of discovery. Who knows how long it has been circling out there maybe a billion years. Hasn't hit us yet so why worry about it, Why wake up about it and the many like it that may come close. Why live my life in worry on the possibility of some future doom that there is nothing I can do to prevent.

Now if you have a solution as to how we can prevent such a catastrophe that something we all like the hear here.
