Alternative Chemical for Benzene

09/14/2011 3:14 AM

Dear All,

I am using benzene as agent to dilute a liquid solution. Being Benzene carcinogenic, I am looking for alternative chemical, that will be less harmfull to use.

Regards,

Nitin

Water's not very harmful.

Without knowing what you're trying trying to dilute, it's a tricky question.

Try toluene or xylenes.

trichlorethylene, methylene chloride, hexane, cyclohexanone, glycol, alcohol, pee, grape soda.

Based on the lack of information provided by you, this is as close as I can get.

Mikerho has your answer. Anything soluble in or miscible with benzene should work equally well with toluene or xylene. They are both readily available and relatively inexpensive.

In the future, I would recommend being less secretive about what you are doing. The other answers you got were well deserved because of this lack of detail.

Good luck with your project; hope to hear of your success.

Nitin,

Get your ass back here and respond to the replies. Anything less is just being rude.

Agreed, but it happens regularly on this forum. Somebody posts a problem, gets plenty of suggestions, but doesn't come back and say if anything has worked. So we all miss out on a chance to learn something.

Folks thanks for you replies,

Apologies, for not able to connect immediately.

As the manufacturer didn't mentioned any details of the contents of the liquid, hence was not able to provide you one.

I am trying the options you guys has given.

Will certainly provide you the feedback.

Regards,

Nitin

http://ehs.mit.edu/site/content/green-chemical-alternatives-purchasing-wizard This is the link to MIT's Green Chemical Alternatives Purchasing Wizard. It has helped many companies reduce their VOC's.

Xylene and toluene are not much better. Studies are showing that these chemicals are potential carcinogens and that at high levels of concentration are carcinogenic.

Good luck in your search! Let us know what the company decides and how well it worked. The choice is all in the details of the process that have yet to be provided.

There is no mention about what is the substance you are diluting with benzene.

Toluene is the simplest alternate to benzene.

In organics, there are lot of options available.

Few of the options could be

* Dilution with water using suitable emulsifiers.

* Aliphatic alcohols or esters

*Possible use of sodium or potassium salt conversions to render solubility

Till you mention about, what is your product, all of us are helpless.
