Kaplan Turbine Blade Anti-Cavitation Lip

10/15/2011 9:35 AM

Hello everybody:

For a new hydropower plant where Kaplan turbines have been selected, I would like to know if it is a normal practice that in the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contract be specified that the turbine blades have to be supplied with anti cavitation lips or this decision has to be taken after the model tests have been performed in the manufacturer lab.

On the Kaplan runner blade the erosion by cavitation is more intense in the leading edge area and on the blade tip; and this is widely known even before any model tests.

In other words, when should be decided whether the blades must wear this anti cavitation lip or not?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

I think you need to specify "up front" the anticavitation feature. If it is added later, the performance of the turbine could change.

Not to mention severe cost overruns.

did you mean cavitation on trailing edge or leading edge ?

particle abrasion causes wear on leading edge doesnt it , while cavitation erodes on trailing edge ?

and yes , any tender should specify accurate information at the start and avoid ten thousand revisions

------------

Sir . did you update drawing 400.2.6 after changing a component on associated drawing number 400.1.6 ?

No ?

damn , send that 400 tonne boiler 3000 km back to the builder to be modified to current spec if you would be so kind.

This one is an EPC contract and the question you pose is " when should be decided whether the blades must wear this anti cavitation lip or not?"

and the answer is "at the time you had framed the clauses of the EPC contract"

Suitable phrasing like " The Contractor shall propose cavitation mitigation arrangements the same shall be verified by computer modelling and / or based on lab test results on a prototype model" would have saved you (and all of us) from all this.
