Awesome carvings. People that can carve away all of a rock that doesn't look like a elephant are aliens to me. I'm still working on drawing stick figures in two colors.

I've seen some of those really detailed carvings first hand. It's totally perplexing to me how they do it. Especially the shading. You could give me a pumpkin, every carving tool known to man, and unlimited time to create something cool, and in the end, I'd be lucky to come up with a pumpkin pie.

Those are pretty cool! Thanks for sharing. I thought it was neat when we used a bat template one year...

http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/photos/0,,20314743,00.html Some of these are incredible.

It also kind of demonstrates the difference between left and right brain thinking. Being an engineering type, I will never be able to understand why these people spend so much time on something that's just going to rot away. Kind of like fancy ice sculptures and sand castles. Why bother?

Gotta love Captain Jack! The painted haunted house was cool, too.

Halloween is pretty big on expression. There aren't too many other times of the year where you can be ANYTHING and spend time putting together a cool costume. I think pumpkin carving today is just an extension of that creativity and expression.

That being said, 90% of the pumpkins I've carved have been three triangles and a squiggly mouth. If I even carve at all! Have you seen these? Reusable -and some versions come pre-carved with lights inside.

Here's mine. An artificial one wouldn't do me any good.

Looks good to me! Light them up and they look good enough for Halloween night.

Nice!! I shouldn't start threads when I know I'm leaving town...............just got back. And yes, I'm completely disconnected when I'm on the road. Feels good.

These are the two that I did this year (using a template). Not the best but my boys loved them.
