Thanks. I think you totally answered the question. I have ordered test strips. Will let you know how I do on my 1999 Dodge van and newer cars. I am surprised that I never heard of these strips. I would guess that the vast majority of flushes are not needed, thus wasting chemicals, money, and time. The best mechanics would use test strips. Great profit item for mechanics, manufacturers, retailers etc. though. I have had problems with cooling systems in vehicles that I did not buy new, and added water to. That was back when I lived in California and didn't worry about freezing weather. I never add any water now. Of course I would use about 30% if flushing. Antifreeze is very toxic, and is used to kill animals. It is also very effective for committing suicide, but very painful since it destroys the kidneys. Ethanol is the handiest antidote, but there are other measures needed also.

The test strips will test antifreeze for the resistance to freezing. I have never seen a strip that tests for corrosion inhibitors. Does anyone know if they do?

They test for Ph which is for corrosion purposes.Check amazon.com they have numerous products.

All of my vehicles and equipment get a full flush and refill about every 3 - 5 years.

3-5 years under normal conditions.

Always add antifreeze if you have to add coolant.

Just bung in a pint of Austrian Chardonnay every now'n again .

You can buy test strips to help determine the condition of your coolant. Fleetguard makes them. In many instances this makes more economic and environmental sense (and cents), then set periodic changes.

My 99 Dodge full size van is good down to -40 degrees, but is alkaline, so I guess I will change it. Every few years is probably a good policy. But I would test it first. The strips are cheap. Thanks for the tip.
