Wonderfully Weird Package Designs

04/30/2007 11:38 AM

Tokyo-based Ping magazine presents a gallery of wonderfully strange snack packages that live on the supermarket shelves of Japanese stores, with a running humorous commentary so you have an idea of what you're looking at — sometimes it's hard to tell the fish snacks from the chocolate bars.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Packaging & Labeling, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Packaging & Labeling today.

The first time I went to Japan, I walked through the corner convenience store (oddly enough, a 7-11) looking at the different packages and cartons, and asking myself, "What the hell is this??". The lack of good english/japanese translation didn't help any. The chewing gum called "Black-Black" had me a little worried, so I shied away. I stuck to good ol' beef jerky (hanging right next to the squid jerky) and Ritz crackers. Go to www.engrish.com for a lot of hilariously bad translations on packaging, clothes, advertisements, etc.
