How Detect Diffrentiation Between Titanium Dioxide Rutile and Anatase?

01/07/2012 9:35 AM

At most factory they told us the sample is tio2 Rutile , so via which easy and rapid method we can understand differentiation between Rutile & Anatase? Via the acide, we can underastand that sample Mix and Feak or puer, but we can not understand it is Rutile or Anatase? Please tell me an easy method which I can test and understand differentiation between rutile and Anatase

anatase is less hard (5.5-6 vs. 6-6.5 Mohs) and dense (specific gravity about 3.9 vs. 4.2), according to Wiki.

True, but not very helpful if you have a small sample to test or if the pigment is dispersed in a paint formulation. XRD is more useful.

The method that immediately comes to mind is X-ray diffraction. Rutile and anatase have different crystal structures and can be differentiated rapidly by this method. You can also analyze mixtures of the two quantitatively. So easy - yes, rapid - yes. However, you would have to do some research on-line to find out if there are any instrument companies that make a suitable low cost XRD system. Try Googling "low cost xrd" - it should give you some leads. Better still, see if there is a dedicated system purely for this application. Consider also, a used instrument to save money.

biosiaveashkizer:

Are you looking for a Rapid..."in situ" (meaning at the mining facilities site) process to notice what kind of Ore you are producing ?.... I am afraid it must be via "acid way"... there are chimestry "combination" to notice rapidlly what kind of ore is that

You can do a streak test. A streak test is a very good cheap way to figure out what mineral you have. It is done by rubbing a sample on a dull white porcelan surface. (For me, I go to the junk store and buy a few porcelan plates which I break so that I have a dull white surface to work on.) Rub your specimen across the surface and see what color streak it leaves. Anatase will leave a white to pale yellow streak. Rutile leaves a brown streak.

For more information "Google ("your mineral" streak test) and you'll get lots of information.

Good luck,

Randy

There are three mineral forms of titanium dioxide and Anatase is one of them , the other two being brookite and rutile. you can find best titanium dioxide manufacturer easily on internet for more clarification about the difference and technical aspects.
