New Blind Beliefs-1

01/15/2012 12:47 AM

Is bath soap rally required ? Dr.Anil Avachat -a well known social activist from Mharastra (India) ,says it is not required ,as skin grows and in the process gets cleaned naturally.I agree with him -I have not seen tiger, deer using bath soap ,but they have bright and beautiful skin.

In my opinion it is cosmetic companies spreading blind belief through advertisements to market their -good for noting- products .

Rather a harsh response.

He said he agrees that not using soap like an animal is his choice, I agreed that it is his choice...How is that harsh?

Are you sure? Maybe your neighbours are too polite ? OK. What about toothpaste ? Have you stopped that too? Rural Indians use a small twig with some medicinal value as a toothbrush, but animals don't, do they? So, have you stopped using a toothbrush+paste ? Nailclippers, haircuts.....ad nauseum ? (nauseum is correct)

Good one ! I appreciate .Please understand, not using soap does not mean not taking care of skin-one may use herbals like ritha (I do not know, what is called in English or in other Indian regions).Even rubbing and massaging (without oil) while taking bath is good enough. No need of any fancy cosmatic chemicals.Same thing with tooth paste .We in India have many good herbals that can be used for taking care of oral helth. I hope this clarifies your apprehensions.Thank you for response.

Though the OP's phrasing does invite 'knee jerk' ethnic prejudiced response - there are a number of medical protocols limiting the use of soaps in tropical climates.

Examples of these can be found in US military documentation.

Animals are creatures of nature, and have to survive according to their environment. They groom and lick their bodies to achieve comfort, humans some time in history discovered such things as fire and along the way soap, something that brought them personal comfort, these days we call it hygiene, and soap companies have added a fragrance, some people think that fragrance is the reason for washing when in fact its hygiene and personal comfort.

Re: New blind beliefs-1

I agree that there are other products that can be used for personal hygiene and comfort, personal discomfort meaning the growth of bacterial, viral and fungus growths that cause irritation. But I think soap is natural, extracted form plants? And as such I don't see it as a pollutant? Additives by soap manufactures maybe? But I see them as a very small percentage of the product as a whole. Soap was something in use long before manufactures came along, and it was a natural product taken from nature. Like I said at the beginning I agree there are other produces that do the same thing, but that does not make a soap, a product of nature, a pollutant.

Re: New blind beliefs-1

Agreed jdretired, soap is basically two natural substances - fat and ash - and breaks down quite readily and relatively harmlessly.

But there is a case for discouraging the 'processing' done in pursuit of 'white' = "pure" soap, then the necessity for anti-irritants and masking agents.

This being before we get to 'additives' like perfume and so on.

But, I think far more eco/$ questionable are the detergent 'body wash' products.

Which raises the question for the OP of; what media or procedure would he/she substitute for 'soap and water' and what is the real eco/$ impact of that in comparison?

Or is this all just another blind rant like 'cow farts' are killing the planet? (as vegans don't)

Good. When other products are available one need not depend on soap alone. But ads by cosmetic companies,by repeated hammering make us thing there is nothing like soap. They spend lot of money on costly advertisement, and there are hundreds of soap companies-this indicated there is huge profit in the process and they can mint money by making us fools.

Wester countries may not be taking bath daily but we in India (and Pakistan,Bangladesh,Shrilanka and this part of the world) take bath daily.Rubbing and washing skin by palm cleans it ,and one can take help from natural herbals and even small round stones from river.Taking bath daily also can be taken as daily exercises and body massage

And when it comes to cleaning for hygiene -I have said no to toilet soap !

Thank you for interaction.Regards

The British lexicographer Samuel Johnson was once told by a matron, "You smell!"

He replied, "No, ma'am, you smell; I stink."

Being nobody has used the Wikipedia card yet, here it is. That is only one out of 18,500,000 results of "why should you use soap for personal hygiene" So again, I would prefer you stay on your side of the pond.

Thanks for catching that 34point5, I'm not sure what happen with that link, which is just as well it was broken. After further investigation, Wikipedia does not cite any references or sources. So, I went to CDC's web site and searched for "reason for using soap for personal hygiene" which has about 885 results regarding the use of soap for personal hygiene, (1) Hygiene in Less Developed Countries, (2)Hygiene is especially important in an emergency, (3) Water-related Hygiene Topics. And the list goes on. The price of a bar of soap would seem like a cheap price to pay when comes down to your health and or your life

I have not seen tiger, deer using bath soap ,but they have bright and beautiful skin.

Yes, but many animals do not smell very nice, bears and sloths come to my mind immediately.

I will completely agree soap and bathing are social customs more than health aids, but one violates social custom with more care than scientific customs.

Curiously as pointed out, teeth seem to be the exception. I wonder if that is because of the recent changes in diet (on an evolutionary scale very recent).

I'm very curious where the fur-less deer and tigers the OP has apparently seen the skin of are.

Only ones I could find are PETA ones "crouching on busy sidewalks in tiny wire cages"

One assumes that you are, by now. No problem, it is your personal choice.

i have one more question ... animals eat their food raw. Do you recommend we do too? i believe man is a carnivore by evolution, and vegetarians and vegans came about by choice...

What do you think of tearing off chunks of chicken while it is screaming ? i can't even do that at KFC.

Soap, perfumes, razor blades etc., are designed to enhance sexual attraction between humans. Do we need them? No.

Would humans be more in sinc with the natural order of things without them?

YES

Would there be less of us?

Maybe.

It's unquestionable that we would be hairier and smellier................but also quite possible that we would be in better shape without them.

Perhaps more in touch with reality.

This is not possible with the artificial enhancements that we have unleashed on ourselves.

I guess the OP would rather emit strong body odor and offend those around him/her....

So much for the sociological aspect in the scheme of things.

I have two (mostly) outdoor dogs.

Their coats are shiny and bright.

Their bellies are clean and pink.

They do not have fleas, ticks, or any other life forms living on them.

They do not use soap.

I would not want to be stuck in a confined space with either of them on a hot day or even a warm day!

On the other hand, I use soap therefore the wifey allows me to sleep in the house at night.

I think bath soap is required for humans. It is one of the items/behaviour that separates us from the dogs no offense Casey and Ginger!

When we go on wilderness treks we take Dr. Bronners. It's all natural and organic. Has a minty smell. After you've washed and rinsed it adds a real tingling sensation to those tender areas of the body. With some of his soaps you can even use as toothpaste.
