Size. You see, despite what most men think, size really is important. Also, you need to think like an estate agent (realator): Location, location, location.

Put the one you've listed last at the beginning of the list and then you have them in size order.

Now go read your lecture notes, or someone else's lecture notes, the set texts and any other relevant material.

Shrinkage cracks are the most probable in concrete.

Your definitions are not universal, they should have been defined by the an authority, such as a code. They look to overlap, a structural crack would indeed be considered major.

Wait a minute. Is this so simplistic that you must choose which is a "MINOR CRACK" and which is a "MAJOR CRACK" from, "STRUCTURAL CRACK" and "SUPERFICIAL CRACK",.

LOL I never thought that I'd live to see the day when a woman said that "size" matters! I've always thought that they preferred "girth" over length! hehehehe

The same thing can be applied in regard to concrete cracks....sorta!!!

What are the units of girth? Is that not still within the definition of size?

Isn't the width of a crack at least as (if not more) important than the length? And like cracks, there's a minimum length to be reached before there's any point getting exicted about it...

And yes, I concur with the other participants in your survey

Please Reference American Concrete Institute (ACI) 224.1R, Causes , Evaluation, and Repair of Cracks in Concrete Structures.

There are other ACI Standards Such as 201.1R, Guide for Conducting a Visual Inspection of Concrete in Service. This Standard does not categorize cracks in the terms in your post. Checking, Crazing, Diagonal, Map, Hairline, Random...etc. are terms for cracks listed under Chapter 2; "Discriptions of Distress."

There are many other "Discriptions of Distress" found in this standard: Spalling, Scaling, Flaking, and Popouts to mention a few.

a major crack compromizes the structural integrity of the concrete. a minor crack is just cosmetic.

The inter action of cracks in concrete is a very lengthly, and detailed subject. There are specialists in this field that are known as horses. I suggest you do a search of "crack horse".............
