No Load Charging of Transformer on Some Other Tap

Can transformer with On load gear, be charged on some other tap position than normal tap position?

Yes, you can energize a transformer with an OLTC (On-Load Tap Changer) at any tap, assuming your load side can accept the range of voltages that the transformer produces across the range of taps. The OLTC controls will then adjust the secondary voltage to reach the desired voltage setting using its tap changing mechanism.

You can energize a transformer with a ULTC (Un-Loaded Tap Changer) also at any tap, but ONLY CHANGE TAPS WHILE DE-ENERGIZED! The ULTC is intended to adjust the transformer secondary for a primary voltage that tends to be higher or lower than nominal, by + or - 2.5% or 5% depending on the tap.
