Are you looking for better/cheaper chemistry, more volume of insect repellent released, a more effective repellent being placed in the air... what?

Our old friend Wikipedia has an article about mosquito coils. These are pretty simple, and it looks like you could make them yourself, formulated with your own magic stuff if you wished to.

The article tells us mosquito coils are manufactured around the world, each plant producing coils suited to local conditions.

We have battled mosquitos for many years here in Florida, it takes a multi-pronged and consistent attack...Those coils and candles never seem to work, the mosquitos stay low to the ground, the heat from anything burning rises along with repellent...

Have used foggers with some success, but this gets expensive...and is only good if there is no wind....

Cowboys in our region used to burn pyrethrum (flowers) mixed in cow dung. It works outdoors. This is where mosquito coils evolved from.

To produce coils you have to add agglutinant (see the Wiki article) and aplly process suggestions already given in this blog. Neem seems to be an alternative to pyrethrum in your region, it's a matter of price, availability and product development.

Yep garlic and VitB works... spend a few years in Chad in the wilds.. every day took all of the Vits and garlic, plus used a body spray with natural deet. I would see those little buggers come at me and in mid flight do a U turn. In two years did not get bit once.. not even at night.

a commercially available over the counter, in a plastic bottle, liquid body spray, with the liquid containing natural deet that one would spray on ones body to repel insects.

Deet (maybe Deat??) is a natural insect repellant.

not real official, only experience when I was younger.

I loved garlic. I was about 16, and I put garlic salt it on everything that needed salting. And my dad complained......I think he intentional sent me to the Fields to work alone. because he could smell it in my perspiration.

We logged with horses, (my dads hobby?) and in late June, a neighbor needed us to select cut and log on some wooded land for him because the land was being sold in mid July.

Anyways to cut the story short. The help we had notice the garlic smell I had and ribbed me about it. well that was the worse job they had for a week. From the mosquito's, the horse were bit up, the workers were bit up...... It was so bad, we didn't even take breaks.

me on the other hand, other than the warm weather, I was very comfortable, not one mosquito bit.

And as from the earlier post..........female mosquitoes must not like it either. They're the ones that bit.

And the garlic was the only thing I can think of. Because when I got off the garlic binge and my system flush out, I once again was open season for mosquito's.

but not everybody likes garlic smell-it may or may not drive off mozzies but will certainly block sweet dreams from making sleep pleasant!!

I think you can make mosquito coils by first making a sheet out of mixed ingredients and then cutting coils out of it through a blade cutter into shape while half-dried.

The manufacturing process seems like making leather/wet board first and then, while it is still semi-wet, cutting it into shape followed by drying.

Cheapest way for tropical poor countries is to use Neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves and burn them in earthen pot. The smoke drives away the mosquitos. You can also use neem oil as repelent or make coil with mixture of cow dung.

You may try this at home..

1.Take some dried Neem leaves, mix them with used cardboard shred, add a little carpenter's glue and mix all these in a litre of water and leave aside for about 15 minutes. You can also add a pinch of foodgrade color to the mix if desired.( neem is green and will display green in your final product) After the cardboard/paper has softened blend the mix in a home blender until smooth.

2. Pour this mixture on a screen already prepared by attaching mosquito netting to a wooden frame, say 12 in by 12 inched square or 12'' X 12"" rectangle to fit a tray which is capable of holding about 1 liter water and in which the frame can be dipped and removed.

3. Pour this mixture over the screen while the screen is held on top of the pan or tray or just put the mixture in the pan and dip the screen in it while agitating the mix.

4. Decide the desired thickness of the sheet that will be formed on the screen by quickly dipping and removing the screen from the tray or pan which holds the mix, stirring the mix at all times so that an even layer of the mixture gets deposited on the screen.

5. Shake out the layer deposited on the screen on a flat surface and let is sun-dry.

6. When semi dry you can cut your coil or strips by a rule die or a knife.

(Note: paper and cardboard are almost made on this principle- even currency notes are made this way and water mark is punched on the bills by a die when the sheet formed is semi-dry!!))

The smoke from smoldering sugar cane thrash is reasonably effective at warding off mosquitoes, but the best approach is to minimise their opportunities to breed - ie don't leave containers of standing water around uncovered, or if that is unavoidable, either have fish in the water to eat the larvae or have a very thin film of kerosene on the surface.

This approach, obviously, must be widely adopted to be effective, but is the best approach.

Only the females suck blood from humans. Try this for personal satisfaction, one on one.

Such blood-sucking by females in support of their reproduction, is at the risk of their lives, so not surprisingly, they tend to be adept at dodging direct attack. However, if mosquitoes were to take alarm at every movement nearby, they would get little rest in breezy weather with leaves oscillating in the wind. Accordingly, they are adapted to ignore side-to-side movement, so a resting female permits a finger to approach slowly if the finger moves several centimetres from side to side about once a second. With practice one can use this stratagem to squash resting mosquitoes with high frequency.

Mosquitoes are exclusively attracted by C02......that is also what you exhale while breathing. Take it from there.

Since my friend is interested in the commercial production of mosquito coils I thought

I must give him some tips which may be of practical use to him.

I suggest that he goes for manufacturing mosquito mats instead of coils.

In order to manufacture Mosquito repellant mats he just have to buy some fluffy cardboard or make his own..He can make it the way tackboard or any other board

is made. To make his own board, 3mm thick, he should blend used kraft paper and a little waste cloth and beat them together in water to turn them into a dusty liquid mixture. Then he should pour the mixture over a small screen, say 12 in by 7 inches intoa holding pan bebeath. Dipping the screen in and out of the pan will determine the thickness of the sheeting. This sheet is then dried in the open sun and when dry peeled off the screen and pressed with a wooden roller ..he can use a pin roller from his kitchen. Sprinkling a little chalk powder will smoothen the board/sheet just as done by the calendering process.

After the board is ready, he now only has to sprinkle it with a mosquito repellant volatile

oil such as pyrethrum..

Cut the board slat by a rule die the size of the slat into small mats the size of an electric mat holder (approx 1.3'' by 0.6 ''), pack and the product is ready for marketing. The process is simple and can be done manually in a small room..

When heat is applied to the mat the volatile repellant evaporates and repels the mozzies..ensuring undisturbed sleep and sweet dreams too!

PS: the board can be imparted color of your choice by mixing some of it by adding

to the basic paper/cotton mixture while it is being beaten down to smooth dust .
