Weight of H-Beam

Dear all,

1) How to calculate the weight of H-beam?

2) What is the difference between H-beam & I-beam?

The Manual of Steel Construction of the AISC in US and the Handbook of Steel Construction in Canada, or any Steel Designer Manual will give you all the data you need to know.


H- beams refer to HP bearing pile shapes with essentially parallel flange surfaces and equal web and flange thicknessess.

I-beams refer to W shapes with parallel flange surfaces or S shapes with sloping inner flange surfaces. THe thicknesses of the webs varies.

Measure the cross-sectional area, multiply by the length, then multiply by the density of steel. If you keep your units consistant, the weight will magically pop out of your calculation. Good luck!

The standard for structural shapes is ASTM A 6/A 6M "Standard Specification for General Requirements for Rolled Structural Steel Bars, Plates, Shapes, and Sheet Piling" it can be purchased from ASTM in PDF form at the following URL http://www.astm.org/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/DATABASE.CART/REDLINE_PAGES/A6A6M.htm?L+mystore+goid1225

It contains dimensions and tolerances including weight per unit length for structural shapes.

An H beam is a structural steel joist that is similar to an I beam except that its flanges are wider, approximating a more square than rectangular cross section. The distribution of metal in the web and flanges of Wide flange beams result in maximum resistance to bending moment for minimum weight per foot length of beam (aha! engineering!)

In order to give you a correct answer, we need to know if the shape is a "W" class or "HP" class. "W" class shapes are doubly symmetric wide flange shapes with inside flange surfaces that are essentially parallel.

"HP" class shapes are wide flanged shapes generally used as bearing piles with flanges and webs of the same nominal thickness and whose depth and width are essentially the same. This design provides increased ruggedness to withstand driving forces, uniform thickness of metal in all parts to provide for uniform life under corrosive conditions for the entire cross section.

Once you determine if you are talking about "W" or "HP" H beams the weight can be determined.

easiest way would be....find what you want to order, maybe using the explanations above. H, W, or S shapes are listed by size, and weight per foot in most catalogs.

an 8 by 12 H beam is 50 lbs per foot. H beam is a wide flange I beam is narrow
