Magnetic Level Transmitter

04/09/2012 11:22 PM

Why magnetic level transmitter used for a vessel or container made of super-duplex stainless steel does not work? Is this due to magnetic field being affected by the steel ?

Without being able to see from here, it is not possible to offer guidance without substantially more information.

If the steel is 400 series it will be magnetic. If it is 300 series (304, 316) it will not be magnetic.

If you have non-magnetic stainless steel, I think we have found the problem.

Unless I am misunderstanding your question.

Yes, it is affected by the steel of your vessel. Unlike 3XX series stainless steel, super-duplex stainless steel has magnetic properties. This causes the magnetic field in the float used in most magnetostrictive level transmitters to be somewhat absorbed by the vessel. The float's magnetic field usually causes the sensor to detect at a certain point (the float's level), but with the vessel you have it is spread out over the sensor.
