Terminal Box

04/22/2012 8:24 AM

Please guide me, For a Motor, If there is any standard, stating Terminal Box location and Cable entry direction to that terminal box.

I am having a motor whos Terminal box is located at top, having cable entry from side, when looked from shaft. and now to have ample maintenance space Terminal box rotation towards fan end will be one of the option. Shall I go for this option ??

Motor : 350 Kw

Thanks in advance,

ashish

For NEMA motors, there is a letter/number that designates the terminal box location. If memory serves, the default is F1. When ordering, this number can be changed to specify another location.

If NEMA, the standard is MG-1, titled appropriately enough 'Motors and Generators'.

Here's a link http://www.americanelectricmotors.com/pdf/aemc_nema_chart.pdf to a downloadable chart. In my experience, the terminal box is usually located on one side or the other. There is usually a lifting eye, or at least tapping for one, on top of a motor this size. Could you mount the box on the side with the cable/conduit entry parallel to the shaft? The box is usually rotatable. Check that with the vendor and also that it would clear the fan cover.

In NEMA MG 1, Terminal Box locations are defined in section 4.3 (Motor Mounting and Terminal Housing Location). Per this section, the Terminal Box locations are left side (F-1), right side (F-2) and top (F-3) for floor mounted motor. For left side and right side locations, the cable entry is bottom. For top location, the terminal box is generally rotatable, so the cable entry can be either side.

It is always suggested to indicate the terminal box location and the cable entry when it is purchased. Generally, it mentioned in the motor data sheet.

Thanks for nice answers !!

Left entry and Right entry to top mounted terminal box is ok. but if we rotate it by 90 degree so that cable entry is from fan end of motor. will it be a problem ?

Thanks a lot !

I don't think it should be a problem. Rotation of top mounted terminal boxes in steps of 90 degrees is an option given by almost all motor manufacturers.
