Check In or Lose Your Internet Access?

04/22/2012 4:16 PM

Has anybody else heard about the fact that if you don't check into a certain site being run by the FBI by July 9th you will lose your internet access if you have a certain Trojan/Virus in your system?

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2012/04/21/fbi-some-americans-could-lose-internet-access-in-july/

"...The FBI is encouraging users to visit a website run by its security partner, http://www.dcwg.org , that will inform them whether they're infected and explain how to fix the problem. After July 9, infected users won't be able to connect to the Internet.

Most victims don't even know their computers have been infected, although the malicious software probably has slowed their web surfing and disabled their antivirus software, making their machines more vulnerable to other problems...

What's bothersome is that there was very little publicity about this and the fact that the above site was supposed to go down on March 8th! Here's an earlier article on the subject:

http://krebsonsecurity.com/2012/02/half-of-fortune-500s-us-govt-still-infected-with-dnschanger-trojan/

Is anyone else aware of this, or am I the only one who senses something odd here?

From Norton: http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/dcwg-org/td-p/701531

"Norton detects DNS Changer as Zlob or Tidserv. If you haven't been alerted to any malware and the test site indicates that your DNS service is fine, you do not have to worry about this."

It sounds like a phishing campaign to me. Just my gut talking.

Sorry, didn't read the CBS article. Could be legit. Of course, I have nothing to worry about as I don't use Windows. Linux FTW.

I heard something about this on our local news. Something about a virus. #1, I do not trust the FBI or any government agency since they seem to want to limit our access to the internet and curtail our on line activities and personal security. DO not visit their web site as they may infect your computer with their virus, if you do, make sure your firewall and all anti virus software is up to date, and even then, just don't do it. Be safe and stay away from them. DO not trust anyone from our government. They are not our friends. Not any more.

That was my take on it as well. I figured it was a way for them to monitor your internet communications/sites visited/political affiliations, etc. According to their definition, are you a terrorist? (Military, ex-military, Tea Party, Republican, libertarian, over 50, NRA member, male, white, over 5 ft. tall, over 100 lbs, etc.) If you meet any of these criteria, they (the FBI) needs to make a dossier on you as a subversive. Me, I wanna join the Secret Service for the benefits!!!

I can't answer if in or x military, you already know, I can't discuss it even if I was. As for the SS, these guys that went to Columbia, all of them should have been sent straight to Leavenworth and hanged. I see one guy wants to do a story on his side of things. No, that doesn't work. You took an oath and signed on to an Honor code, you break that code, you are to be put down. End of discussion. These guys were sent over there to secure the Hotel, they were not sent there to secure the hotel, then secure a bunch of prostitutes and break the code, possibly jeapordizing the Presidents stay while in Columbia for these talks. For that, these guys, all of them, need to be hanged. As for being in the service, they know how it works. And to have the best of the best act this way. Hang em! So yes, I am X military and took my job serious, professional and still do. And yet , I do not trust them as much as I can throw them over the bank. Lots has changed since retirement. Our Government has changed, it no longer represents the people in any way, we are a minor issue, we are actually a problem for them, mostly for the GOP. They don't like us, in fact they hate Americans, true Americans. Now I am really getting over my say. If you are into electric, make sure you arm your property and keep your space safe, stay away from unknown web sites, and keep your anti virus and fire wall up to date, not only that, do not trust many. Look what is happening around the world. When is it our turn?

And as long as we are on the subject, I would like to say our federal government and the judicial system, and especially the federal reserve, are totally out of control. I love this country, but I am ashamed of our government. I weep for the children of America, for most of them I fear will become slaves.

Unfortunately, the US Supreme court made it easier for them to turn that around on us, when they ruled that the police can strip search anyone that they arrest for any reason.

Definitely sounds like a big phishing scam. They couldn't stop you from being on the internet. Sure they check your hard drive for something but they are probably putting tracking cookies on your computer so they could start tracking your internet usage.

The story also states that two servers running for 8 months has cost the government $87000. Sounds great compared to how much it is to send Obama and his cronies on one vacation. Also the vacations usually only last one week, not eight months.

Your statements are too radical political for a response, except to say that presidential travel arraingments have been the same for the last 50 years.

I'm a Republican, but I don't begrudge THE PRESIDENT safe and secure travel, no matter which party is in power.

I dont begrudge anyone, including the President, safe and secure travel. On the internet, the federal government can print enough money to buy google, facebook, etc. So why would the FBI be going through this trouble to "help" us? Could this be a test to see who complies and who does not? Or maybe someone in the FBI truly believes they can help and the more sinister people there are helping to push the issue for their own reasons. Remember, the internet was the brainchild of DARPA, dont you think they know how to check you out?

If privacy issues are a concern, Google: NSA Utah "Data Center" Biggest ever Domestic Spying Lab. Construction started in 2010 and is scheduled to be completed in 2013. Big Brother is here. The two billion dollar facility is being constructed at Camp Williams military base. Once communication data is stored, a process known as data-mining will begin. Big Brother will have the capability to know just about everything about every individual.

Re: Check In or Lose Your Internet Access?

You'd be surprised how many people just openly give full permission to companies / organizations to check out everything you have. Here's a snippet from EA's Origin user agreement (which hundreds of thousands have already accepted):

"2. Consent to Collection and Use of Data.

You agree that EA may collect, use, store and transmit technical and related information that identifies your computer (including the Internet Protocol Address), operating system, Application usage (including but not limited to successful installation and/or removal), software, software usage and peripheral hardware, that may be gathered periodically to facilitate the provision of software updates, dynamically served content, product support and other services to you, including online services. EA may also use this information combined with personal information for marketing purposes and to improve our products and services. We may also share that data with our third party service providers in a form that does not personally identify you. IF YOU DO NOT WANT EA TO COLLECT, USE, STORE, TRANSMIT OR DISPLAY THE DATA DESCRIBED IN THIS SECTION, PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL OR USE THE APPLICATION. This and all other data provided to EA and/or collected by EA in connection with your installation and use of this Application is collected, used, stored and transmitted in accordance with EA's Privacy Policy located at www.ea.com. To the extent that anything in this section conflicts with the terms of EA's Privacy Policy, the terms of the Privacy Policy shall control."

Those that aren't wary of their actions are giving power to large corporations that won't hesitate to disperse it to a government agency (or worse, if you can even imagine). Best we can do is encrypt our information, keep a wary eye on what user agreements we are agreeing to (instead of haphazardly jumping into them), and make it as difficult as possible for outside sources to just grab private information.

Didn't Verizon (and others) give the government access to its information, by just a request from an agency?

This was just exposed, recently, by I can really recall.

Re: Check In or Lose Your Internet Access?

I'm curious to think what the internet providers (i.e. Verizon, Time Warner) think about all this. I'm thinking that the majority holder for this kind of malware would be those that lack the computing knowledge to get rid of it (or any kind of PC infection), so when the internet suddenly goes out, those providers are going to get hit by a full fledged wave of disgruntled users.

Instead of attacking the users that don't know any better, maybe the FBI should be working to eliminate the flaw in Microsoft's OS. I personally think they're just sore after having their own security compromised so frequently these past few years (as well as some other government websites).

I format: C quite often. When my hard drive gets too cluttered and I start running out of space I give it the total enema. If it gets too full I don't have enough space to rip movies. It needs to create a rather large temp file before burning.

Don't trust any government. The local government forced an urban street through our rural neighborhood and just made a big mess of things. It's so bad we want to move.

Next thing they'll want require a transvaginal ultrasound to get through airport security.

Many, including me, think that you are basically right. Many, if not most, of the employees of the various government agencies are hard working decent individuals, who don't overstep the bounds.

However, there are too many opportunities and examples of abuse of a system that gives too much snooping (or any other kind of) power to individuals within government agencies. A few very public examples are Ruby Ridge, Waco, and Abu Ghraib. Recently "the Supreme Court upheld a policy implemented by New Jersey jails that requires full strip and body cavity searches of everyone who is arrested and processed at the jail, no matter how minor the crime for which they were arrested."

Even the founding fathers of the United States warned about trading a little freedom for security, because soon you will have neither.

Strange as it may seem, there are those of us that are against political corruption and also against using public office for personal gain. I believe the term they use to describe us is "Non-conformist". I am holding my breath waiting for presidential candidates to start killing each other off to get into office. There is so much money and power involved.....

ps- Thanks for the dialogue, I was just wondering how many people were aware of this.
