PIC Programmer Compatibility

05/12/2012 5:53 PM

I was wanting to get a pic programmer to edit the firmware in a keychain camera. The camera has a firmware chip which says:

25Q80SCP

E44553

A4EF1103

I was wanting to get the pic programmer here, but do not know if it will be able to read the firmware to a bin file and then flash the file back again. I need to read the firmware from the chip, edit it and rewrite it back.

A PIC Programmer will not "read" this chip. You would most likely need either proprietary hardware and/or proprietary decoding software to read it. After all, the manufacturer has to protect itself from theft somehow, right?

That does not seem to be a Microchip product, so any of the PIC programmers or in-circuit emulators will not work.

A quick search seems to indicate that the chip is simply FLASH memory and not a micro.

There is a discussion forum about this part and the camera HERE that may help you.

I thought that it would be possible as people have done it with an MD80 camera clone which has an 8 pin firmware chip just like my keychain camera.

Most companies protect their proprietry code from being accessed or copied.

Some 10 years ago, some protected chips could be tricked into allowing a code read out, but as far as I am aware, these "holes" have been plugged long ago....

Sorry to be so negative.

Best of luck.

I agree with what others have said not a pic chip.

I have used a few of the keychain type cameras for various projects like putting one on an rc plane. The best website I have found that has info on modifying them using them or just reviews of them is this one. http://chucklohr.com/808/
