Doubt On Compressor Operation

05/16/2012 12:27 AM

Hello Everyone,

Lets suppose, I design a compressor for 5 bar head and it's the only component to overcome the pr. drop in a closed loop (filled with gas).
After calculations the worst pr. drop in the loop comes out to be around 2-2.5 bar.

Now my doubt is according to H-Q curve as head decreases, flow increasesand since flow is fixed (0.2kg/s) will compressor under perform as i am not utilizing overall head (5 bar) or Best efficiency point (BEP) can't be attained or in worst case surge-stall range would be too small to operate the compressor.

please clear my doubts.

Why you want to design for 5 bar head when in worst case you require 2.5 bar only? Which type of compressor? Fluid to be compressed? Compressor size (kW) ? Lot of information missing.

You can install anti-surge device which can automatically recycle excess gas to suction or vent to atmosphere in case gas is air. but it's a costly affair for a small compressor. Other way is to install a VFD for speed control and run at speed required to generate 2 bar pressure.
