Topic for Project

05/25/2012 11:21 PM

Hello All,

Good morning!

I know that, it is not the right platform to ask the suggestion about the project topic, but the other side there are lots of expert are connected to this. That's why I thought to ask. I have 5 years of experience on shop-floor production as an production engineer. Now I am pursuing my MBA. I have to do a project in Operation stream. I am little bit confused in selection of topic. It my be related to problem on shop-floor or base on supply chain management or related to inventory management (or based on something more, if you know the other functionality related to operation). Pls suggest some good topic which carries a good weightage.

Ton of thanks in advance.

Pay no attention to these fools.

Look at the shop floor, and figure out a way to make it faster and more efficient.

Hint: The way to make people work harder and become more dedicated to the task at hand, is not with a whip.

Uncertainty can be pretty hairy, but if you shave the bad options off the top..........................the path becomes very clear.

Oh, oh.....................gettin' time for me to shut up. It's 5 oclock somewhere.

I understand your apprehension and uncertainty in choosing a project topic. You've been spending months reading and analyzing superb case studies that exemplify how to manage the operation stream at various companies. These case studies were examples where spectacular successes were achieved by applying a new methodology at a company. Your project proposal does not have to be the spectacular success as the case studies you just analyzed. Your project proposal doesn't even have to be implemented by any company. Your proposal does have to be refined to the level that a real or mythical company could accurately evaluate and implement your proposal.

The real goal of this project is to demonstrate that you understand the material you were taught, not to produce a realized case study of the caliber that you had in your classes. We did not take the classes, you did. We may easily propose a project that reflects nothing about what you were taught. We also could propose a project that exceeds what you were taught.

I do have a suggestion for you. Reflect back on your classes and find a moment that you said to yourself "That's why they did that." This will probably be a good thing to incorporate in your project because it intrigued you.

GA from me.

BTW, I do not agree with Freeman Dyson, in my opinion the epitome of engineers is Leonardo.

No, Freeman Dyson is a world renown theoretical physicist that understands the job task differences between an engineer and a scientist. These job tasks are not mutually exclusive to either individual. Many an engineer have made scientific discoveries. Similarly many scientists have made superb reliable machines. Far too often I see a scientist that cannot stop thinking like a scientist building an unreliable machine that operates around the desired point while using all of the latest bells and whistles.

I believe that kramarat is thinking of James Dyson and his collection of air movement machines.

It is always better to consult your project guide to select suitable project. If he/she asks you to choose you can select from the area you are comfortable and able to get data for analysis and get good results. All the Best.

Since you are pursuing an MBA, maybe you should chose a project that's in that area rather than a "production" oriented one. Something like TQA, or Working Capital Management, BPO, Financial analysis of Operation stream, etc. etc.

I will recommend you "Energy Saving in your Plant". Now a days cost of energy is going up so this project may help your organisation. Suggest the methods of saving energy by adopting new technology such as VFD drives, energy efficient lights etc., convert energy saved in Ruppees terms in a year and present to your management.
