Turbotronics 4 Solar upgrade

07/06/2012 12:19 AM

Good Day everyone, I wanted to ask if anyone has experienced a complete face lift on their Solar gas turbines, I'm in the process of replacing the entire control panel and fuel system on 3 centaurs and 2 Taurus gen sets. What do you think of it? Has anyone had problems ie...software. hardware..? Any opinion would be welcome. Sincerely EG Clemons

OK, is the brand name Solar or does this run on hydrogen? Perhaps this is a gag?

No joke, Solar industrial turbines a catipillar company out of San Diego Ca. We run small 2.5 meg and 5 meg units or so. Hydrogen I like that...

Made by Solar Turbines in San Diego, California, (close to the San Diego Airport, possibly Street address of Kettner and Harbor Drive) and sold worldwide. Almost went to work there when I was younger. As far as I know, they are still in business.

Solar Turbines is definitely still in business!

Unfortunately I apparently join others in having no answer to the OP's questions.

Why are these being rebuilt? Damage? Age? ...

Solar will end support on it's turbotronics 3 control system is my understanding hence the upgrade. We just completed one and already I have issues with the Allen Bradley touch screen. ...Give me good ol' push buttons any day..keep the PLC!

Ah! That makes sense.

I currently live less than 2.5 miles from the Solar Plant when I am in San Diego (roughly every other week), and we occasionally do sub-contracting for them, but I know almost nothing about their products.

Good luck on your project. I'm old enough to prefer actual switches as well...

To support NotUrOrdinaryJoe, - is the word Solar in the post heading actually referring to Solar, as in Solar Energy, - ie energy coming directly through radiation from the Sun, or could it be as Joe suggests an attention getting word with no meaning in the context. If just attention getting, fine, your business, possibly a good chance for you to more exactly re-state your problem, but if actual Solar is involved then you need to explain to us just how it is involved in your situation/problem. Sorry for the Confusion, The tag should have said Solar Gas Turbines.

Boy, who knew that the word Solar was so touchy? Personally I don't think you owe anyone an apology, especially in the context of a company that's been around with that name since the 1920's.

They make great products, and typically are genuinely good people to work with. The Turbotronics system is Allen-Bradley Controllogix-based -- Everybody and their brother can troubleshoot and program them, and are robust. I'd be really surprised if you had any serious trouble. The new(er) digital field elements I don't think are any better or worse than electro-hydraulic, just different (and cleaner to work with, at least).

Good luck with your project!

I'm also pretty sure that Allen Bradley now makes their own packaged retrifit unit for those. There is an entire sales force within Rockwell for it, I know that.
