Help Me for Information On Immersion Heater

07/07/2012 7:20 AM

I am a fresh pass out B Tech EE and have joined a company who are manufacturing Industrial Heaters. The company is new in this line.

I have recently faced a bitter experience and would like to have a solution.

Our welder while brazing three SS 304 U tubes of 8.2 mm OD one by one on a MS Screw type Flange of 2.0" BSP with 43% silver found the tubes cracked at the brazing point.

Though we could not detect the crack with naked eye the same could be detected when we dipped the Immersion Heaters into the water at the point where it is brazed and then checked with an insulation tester.

All the three tubes are fixed on the flange simultaneously, used flux at the point of brazing to clean the tubes and then brazed in a low flame.

Please help me out to get rid of these cracks on the tube.

"brazing three SS 304 U tubes of 8.2 mm OD one by one"

is contrary to, "All the three tubes are fixed on the flange simultaneously".

Which is it?

If you do the brazing manually that too for mass production cracks develop due to non uniform flow of the brazing material and flux and use of improper flame of the torch. It is a specialised job to be done by experienced welder. The quality of the joint depends on the workmanship and the brazing material and flux. If most of the joints are failing you have to check the properties of the brazing material used and flame temperature . Correct temperature and proper brazing materials are required for a good joint. If your company can afford there are latest custom made machines available in the market for brazing of immersion heaters.

a "brazing furnace" would be the obvious solution.
