Heat Exchangers Thermowell

07/20/2012 10:10 AM

Wake frequency calculation of Thermowells for Heat Exchanger Shell and Tube side nozzles are required or not. In practice we do not undertake these calculations. I am not having suitable reasons for this. The nozzle is designed keeping in mind vibration associated with velocity of the flluid, then why we don't undertake vibration calculations for Thermowells. Can any one help me clarify this?

If other codes and standards do not apply (TEMA or API for example), I would think you would use the same criteria as for thermowells in piping.

It all depends on the conditions. If the velocity is less than 0.64m/s [2.1ft/sec] then a calculation - according to the ASME 19.3 standard - is not required. I have never heard, or come across a WFC for a heat exchanger, but there's always a first time.

They are so rigid that a vibration calculation is meaningless. I mean, do one yourself and see.
