Design of Electromagnet Coil

07/24/2012 8:26 AM

...is there any available guru to give an overview or criteria , or guidelines in designing an electromagnetic coil? Such coil is to be used in lifting steel material at least 5,000 kilograms powered by 240 VDC? A calculation of the size of coils, iron plate, etc?

Thanks.

It would need to be about 2 - 2.5 meters in diameter and need to draw around 100 - 150 amps at 240 VDC. The iron would have to be a soft cast or other similar metal that has good magnetic properties but does not stay permanently magnetized after having a magnetic field applied to it.

The windings would also need to be light weight which in factory made electromagnets used in salvage yards they are wound with aluminum ribbon and paper insulation.

Over all you would be best off to go out and buy a good sized salvage yard crane electromagnet. You will time and money ahead if you did!
