Correct Piping Size for N2 Injection

Hi ,

I need find out what is the minimum pipe size I will be able to inject 30000m3/hr hot Nitrogen at about 170 degree celcius for a reactor cooldown. Possibly looking at 30 hour operations here. Client had advised a 6" pipework but I believe that is too small and might cause me excessive back pressure at my N2 pumps. Is there any calculation I can show to client on what the minimum requirement will be.

A 1mØ pipe gives around 10ms-1 velocity.

At 6inØ and 170degC the velocity is around Mach 1!

Is it gas or liquid nitrogen?

If it is liquid then 30000 m3/hr is too high a figure, and 170 degC is not possible.

If it is gas then you must consider pressure. Also, normally flow of gases are expressed in at NTP (Nm3/hr). Please check whether you are talking about Nm3/hr or m3/hr. If it is Nm3/hr, then first convert in to m3/hr which will be a smaller figure. With m3/hr calculate velocity for 6" pipe, if it is above 15 m/s, go for higher size. But if you need only for 30 hours you may go for 50 m/s too.
