"M2 taping in mild steel" is hardly enough information to allow anybody to give advice to you.

There are numerous charts, books, web sites and other resources that can be used to learn about proper feed rates and drilling and tapping holes in materials.

I suggest that you search for some of these resourses instead of asking strangers to solve unknown problems with unknown materials under unknown conditions.

One parting piece of advice: Slow the speed down.

What was the size of your pilot?

Blind or through tap?

Depth/thickness?

New or "salvaged" tap?

Lube OK?
