Why not talk to someone who will ultimately make the sale to you and let them help with the selection. They will have many more questions for you,(not the least of which will be "where are you located"), but that's better than trying to bluff your way through a purchasing exercise involving many thousands of dollors.

Thanks for the information. I'm not in charge of the purchasing, just an intern handed a project and would like to learn more about how to decide these types of things (the electrical guy here doesn't seem to want to offer any insight ). Maybe a more specific question could help:

In terms of the amps required, would you need to find a diesel generator that is rated for the highest amount of amps required for both units (1050), or would you need to sum the total (1050 +60 = 1110 A)?

You need to plan for total max load and add reserve for losses and future expansion.

How did you arrive at the amp requirement figures you are quoting? Are these RLA off the machinery? You would need to know what type of machinery it is and what the peak or starting amp requirements would be....Yes you can add the two together....Generators typically have peak ratings well above stated capacity for starting induction motors...also you need to know how critical the application is...whether a backup generator will be necessary...You also need to consider fuel availability, cost of fuel, in some cases another fuel type may be warranted....Space requirements need to be addressed as well, not only for DG but support equipment as well...How much fuel will need to be stored...

What kinds of loads are the two "units"? Motor(s), heater(s), other? For starting a motor, the genset kw needs about 3x the motor kw; for a heater, 1x.

To write technical specifications ideal solution is consult expert or consultant. If this is difficult get the technical literatures from different suppliers of DGset ,read ,understand and develop the technical specification in consultation with experts in this field.
