ISDN (Radio Broadcasting)

08/16/2012 11:49 AM

Hi Friends.

I'm upgrading 5 Radio Production Studios and neeed to buy a good quality ISDN Codec. I have few brands to choose from, but my problem is what to look for in ISDN Codec?

Hello Gendo and welcome to CR4.

This may help you, ISDN for audio transport explained.

In the section on selection criteria they suggest asking your colleagues, not much help really but they do go into detail on interoperability so this may be the critical consideration.

Will the upgrade be a greenfield affair or will you have legacy issues to contend with?

Hello Wal.

Thank you very much for your response. Last one, don't you have a similar link for Telephone hybrids? I need some guidance on how to get a good quality Telephone Hybrid.

Thanks for your time

Gendo

I have always had good results with Sonifex hybrids (or Telephone Balance Units - TBUs as they are known over here). I have used them both in the UK and on dubious quality lines in the developing world and found them good. I have not found other cheaper units anywhere near as satisfactory.

What is your local traffic reporter using? What does your voice talent have if they are remote? What do they have in the other studios you will be connecting to? You just need a codec that is compatible with them and your phone carrier.

We use TieLine for remote work - basketball and baseball for radio mostly, on both ends of the wire.

They have great stuff and great support, and we never have problems with the iMixG series.

Of course, as Wal points out, there's a vast difference between a greenfield project and a retrofit. Are all the studios in the same market, or different markets owned by same media conglom?

Contact the news producer. Find out who the most bitchy, fussy, complaining, on-cam standup or remote talent is. Ask that talent who they prefer to work with for field engineering. Call that guy. He'll know what works and keeps PIA from going nova on assignment.
