If your laptop freezes before Windows is fully loaded then there is probably not a fix that works, can you boot up in safe mode without this error? In this situation, I would create another partition using the Windows disc and reload Windows in the new partion. This way after it is reloaded, you will be able to retrieve your old files.

Sounds like you have "lost" your mswsock.dll.

What edition of windows are you running and do you have the recovery disks for it?

Dang, That particular dill is registry specific.

Ok first run a search on your system. The windows search feature is fine. Search for the missing file by its full name including the .dll as it could bhave been accidentally moved to a different folder. If it is still on your system move it to your C/windows/system32 folder and attempt a boot in safe mode. Otherwise it may be possible to get a copy of it from a clean install (check with your friends) and then drop it in the correct folder, (usually C/windows/system32) restart the system in safe mode. let the boot run its course. Then shut down and reboot regularly.

Again it will depend on the recorded value (byte size)for that dll in the registry as to whether this will work or not. But it is worth a try. I do not recommend altering the registry under any circumstances unless you really understand what your doing.

I wish you the best of luck!
