Neil Armstrong Dead at Age 82

08/25/2012 3:39 PM

Aerospace engineer, Neil Armstrong passes away.

Saw the headlines, but no details.

I was a spellbound child when he first set foot on the Moon, but I remember my dad bought a new color TV before the launch just so we could watch history unfold (even though the NASA feed was still in black and white).

He was a staunch avocate for NASA and the manned space program. He will be missed very much.

Indeed. He didn't give many interviews, but there was a good one that I enjoyed a couple months or so ago on NPR.

I remember clustering around a picnic table, with my other family members, as we watched those memorable events on a 13" b&w portable. We were on a family camping trip and we were on the shore of Lake Huron.

Without a doubt, those of us born in the middle 1950s have seen amazing advancements in science and technology that have crafted our futures. Neil and his compatriots, were at the vanguard of that future.

Mankind has lost a true pioneer...

R.I.P. dear Sir...

I've still got the photos I took off the TV set of his first step onto the moon, in 1969. I met him once.

I also remember my great-grandfather who was born the same year the US transcontinental railroad was completed, in 1869.

The progress, and the changes in the world that took place over a mere 100 years is almost mind-boggling.

Armstrong's death truly marks the end of an era. It's sad to think of him, The First Man To Walk On The Moon, as being gone.

Anybody know what the flag protocol is?

I have a tall flagpole at work that flies both USA and AZ flags.

We built lots of communications equipment in AZ for the space program in the 60's-80's.

A great ACHIEVEMENT and a GREAT MAN indeed. May his soul rest in peace.

From Apollo-8 Mission, during 1968 december - CHRISTMAS TIME, which orbitted moon - 70 Miles ( about 112 K.M) above the Moon's surface, I was very much intrested and closely reading, and Apollo-10 Mission, orbitting 10 Miles above the Moon's Surface and Apollo-11 landed on the Moon. Then I collected a lot of information from different sources.

When Apollo-11, orbitting the other side of the moon, Radio Communication was lost for 22 Minutes, which was A TENSE MOMENT. Finally landed in the Moon on 21st July 1969.

I never had the opportunity to meet him, but a company that I worked for used to rent his twin-engine plane for mid-length trips to clients.

When he left NASA in 1981, he became a professor (engineering, of course) at the University of Cincinnati- where I live- for 10 years. GOD- I would have LOVED to have had him for a prof.

I was born in 1950, and always interested in rocket flight and space exploration. Watching that landing and "giant leap" was an absolute OH MY GOD moment that I, and all of my family sitting glued to the set, will never forget.

RIP and fly with the angels, Mr. Armstrong.

It would be much better if after dialling a number,we can use a keyboard to type the message which appears on a screen on the other side, without sound, irrespective of whether receiver is attending or not.

There's no screen "on the other side" where Mr. Armstrong now resides.

Re: Neil Armstrong Dead at Age 82

Mr. Armstrong was not just an American hero but a hero of the world. On that spectacular day he united the world. This is an honor that goes to so very few.

I was born in 1967, I heard about so many stories about the man on the moon that I felt that I was there that day.

My grandmother was not happy about it because she said she grew up believing that there already was a man in the moon, 1899.

My father said that it was such an amazing triumph for man and science that we would probably see another such event in our life time.

My mother said that only Kennedy had the courage to challenge such an event and that no other president would ever do so again.

All three comments ring so loud in my memories, it was like learning that there was no Santa Clause, the first day I soloed in a plane, when my first child was born.

Mr. Armstrong was not a loud, flamboyant man, he didn't need to be. He accomplished his goals and said very little, but what he did say was heard around the world.

Yesterday we lost a hero, leader, peace maker, teacher, pioneer and a friend to the world. His seat in the science community will never be filled but will always hold his place.

Mr. Armstrong has taught me to challenge myself, not to listen to other say that it can't be done and to persevere where no others have gone before.

Thank you Mr. Armstrong.

First man to walk on the Moon.

You can't beat that.

Any other accomplishments just fade .....

Pretty sure that he had few of any regrets.

RIP Mr Armstrong.

Has POTUS mentioned anything about this Man's passing yet?

MR Armstrong could have easily been president. He had better things to do.

Yes he has:-

In a statement, President Obama called Armstrong "among the greatest of American heroes - not just of his time, but of all time."

The above was taken from a very informative article here:-

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/25/neil-armstrong-dead-age-82_n_1830343.html

Now Neil is among the stars for ever and ever.......

I was on leave at home in the UK at the time and watched it live on UK TV.......awe inspiring.....it made me a long term proponent & friend of the USA and it's citizens......many thanks Guys and Gals....

Re: Neil Armstrong Dead at Age 82

I grew up watching the entire space program. I lived and breathed everything space related....maddening for my parents and teachers I'm sure! LOL I was 11 years old when Neil Armstrong descended the steps of the Lunar Module. I remember staying up late to watch the event with the entire family huddled around an old B&W TV. I drove my parents nutz complaining about the very poor images coming back from the Moon, as they were kind of fuzzy and had too many gray zones w/ shadows.

It's bit of an understatement to say that Neil Armstrong was one of my heroes. He was right up there with Chuck Yeager, Scott Crossfield, Albert Einstein, and John Wayne. He was a great inspiration for myself and others of our generation. More than anything, I do firmly believe I became an engineer because of him and his accomplishments.

May he Rest In Peace and soar with the Angels!

Re: Neil Armstrong Dead at Age 82

Another big issue re the accomplishment-

HE, and his entire team- gave all the REAL credit to that vast group of support team that was NASA and its suppliers. They ALL knew that, no matter what the "risk", they had just gone along for the ride.

It was made possible by several million people doing their jobs- which, sometimes, no one had ever done before.

Those of us who were old enough to have watched that landing realize all of the new systems that have been developed as a result of the space race. Just think about it- we USED to run our calculations on monster "adding machines" that took a minute or two to crunch out a calculation input. The computing power in our Blackberrys or I-pads is higher than was available in an entire ROOM of machines. When was the last time you used a slide rule to crunch out some calculation (to a reasonable significant digits)?

SOME so-called "Heros" have accepted the glory for their accomplishment as if THEY were the only reason it happened. Others, like Mr. Armstrong, put the credit exactly where it belonged. Sure, he was very good at what he did but his skills were not THAT much better than his other fellow astronauts. He was chosen to be the one who stepped out first. He realized that EVERY Apollo mission- whether it landed on the moon or just circled it, or barely made it back (Apollo 13), contributed to the vast pool of "learnings" about space travel and related operations, and that they all depended on contributions from a lot of people.

Because of the way he handled himself AFTER that event, I really believe is what made him a TRUE hero.

Armstrong stepping down was the singular best thing I ever saw (or ever will) on TV. To call it an iconic momment would understate it by several orders of magnitude. Humankind screws up plenty, but that moment captured the very best of what we can do.

I was a 13 year old paperboy in Columbus Ohio at that time, so I ordered extras for my father and myself. I have lugged these around for 43 years.

Neil Armstrong, NASA and all those involved, inspired generations toward science, engineering, and discovery.

I wish we still had that kind of focus. It drove so many technologies and advances that everybody takes for granted these days. Most people only think about the "cost of the space program", and don't realize all of the benefits derived from it, that they need and use every day.

Something just popped into my head-

Wouldn't it have been REALLY COOL if Armstrong had joined Glenn in making that Geriatric space trip on board the shuttle? The first American to orbit the earth and the first Human to walk on the moon (who are both from Ohio) on the same space flight. I think that Glenn would have still "beat" on being the Oldest person in space.

Reports indicate that Armstrong spent most of his post-moonwalk life playing-down his personal involvement with the achievement, celebrating the efforts of others that placed him there and got him home safely, and avoiding the limelight where possible. Add to the mix the achievements of those involved in getting the stricken Apollo 13 craft's astronauts home as well, and one cannot help feeling that Armstrong was right - and that is a highly-principled approach.

Armstrong was an ambassador for mankind, with emphasis on the second syllable of the word. That is his legacy.

The world has lost a remarkable individual.

There was a superb tribute to the man in E&T (for non-Brits, it's a monthly science journal). I usually keep them all, but can't find the article right now.

He was viewed as a bit reclusive, but with good reason. I'm kicking myself for not having the article to hand, but he'd spoken with somebody of similar astonishing note. The advice, which Armsrtrong eventually took was not to give autographs. He simply didn't want to be a cult hero when he knew how many people had worked on the entire mission. His biog includes some outstanding stuff that is far outside of aerospace (biology, of all things). Planet Earth could have had no better person 'do the job'. A brilliant mind, a skilled practical guy, and a humbleness that is a model for anybody.

If I can find the article (it included one of his rare interviews) I'll give a link if possible. I'd get naughtied for typing it up in full. It's one of the best tributes I've ever read
