2000 Chevy Cavalier Won't Start

09/01/2012 9:24 AM

Hi every one.

I have a 2000 Chevy Cav. and it was running just fine when the car was shut off last night. I went to go to town this morning and when I cranked it over it sounded like it was just hitting on 1 to two cylinders. It is the 2.2, 4 cylinder. I used a nother vehicle to go to town and when I tried to start the car later on, it didn't sound like it was hitting on any cylinders. Where do I begin
Appreciate any help.

Thanks Dnorris

Are you a DIY repair person? Do you have the tools and knowledge and area to work on an automobile? First thing to do would be to check the gas, then fuses, then fuel pump...

Air, fuel and fire. These things are necessary for the jewel to run. Could be crank sensor, or any of the dozens of other sensors on the vehicle. Do you have a volt meter?

Like SE says, if you don't have some diagnostic tools and ability, have it hauled to the shop. (Or land fill)

These cars are without a doubt the biggest fraud ever sold to the public. Every problem that can happen, has happened. Look on some Cavalier forums and ask others who are also afflicted with Cavalier ownership.

My advice: Have it towed to the shop.

Is the "Check Engine" light on? If it is, connect a code reader to it which may narrow down where the problem lies.

This is such a common discussion on CR4, I'm not sure how many people will get involved again at the initial stage. You can find great information on CR4 from past discussions (some folks actually got their Cavaliers to run again, I hear). Over on the right side of the CR4 window, in the 'Search all of CR4' box, type 'Cavalier won't start' and hit the 'Go' button. This will list links to past discussions. If you have anything which hasn't been covered, which I doubt, I'm sure someone will pitch in.

You parked your car in the swimming pool when you blundered home the night before.

Drain the pool, let the car dry off and try again.

Your car needs four things to make it run. Fuel, spark, air, and compression.

Start with pouring about 1 oz. of gasoline into the air inlet of the throttle body. (not the air filter) Then get a garden hose next to the car and charge it. Now try to start it. If it runs for a few seconds, then dies, the engine is lacking a fuel supply. That can be anything from a fuse, to a relay or wiring issues to a bad in tank fuel pump.

If the gasoline does not allow it to start, It is time to check for spark at the plugs. Remove a spark plug wire and spark plug. Put the plug into the plug wire, and lay on a grounded metal part. Have someone try to start the engine, while you look for sparks from the electrode of the plug. If you have spark, it is time to check compression. If no spark, you will need to check the ignition components further.

Try these tests, and let me know.

Four and a half things, you also need a key with the right chip, properly programmed for that car, to get a modern car to start. It either comes under fuel or spark, depending upon the design.....

Also a good Receiver unit in the car!!!! But they can be bypassed when you know exactly how....

Check your fuel pressure at the engine fuel rail.

If it is low or none, most likely your fuel pump is B.O. as this is a common occurance with these GM vehicles.

Before assuming it is the fuel pump, you need to check your vehicle collision/impact sensor as it will defeat the fuel pump if activated. (Normally located on driver's side in the kick panel or on the immediate firewall.)

If you have't done so, you will need to purchase a reliable, accurate after-market or dealer repair manual for your vehicle in order to even begin to troubleshoot it.

If you are not pretty knowledgeable of automotive mechanics and electrical it is in your best interest to take it to a reputable repair facility or technician.
