1996 Chevy z24 Loses Coolant and Freon

09/07/2012 2:17 PM

Hi, my chevy will hold the coolant and freon until i park on an uneven surface (usually with the front facing down hill AKA my driveway). Are these components somehow intermixed? I thought the air conditioning was a closed system? The leak occurs behind the motor when standing in front of the car. It also leaks pretty fast. When the coolant leaks out i wait about an hour and fill it back up and it holds. Same with the r135a. oh yeah in both parts not all the liquid drains. I still have a little coolant and freon left. So im miffed. Thanks for the help.

Hmmm....What I gather from this is that the leaks of coolant and freon happen concurrently, and you see the coolant leaking from the rear of the engine compartment. One thing that comes to mind is a possible problem with the heater core / cooling coils under the dash and the lines that connect them. Do you smell any coolant inside the car?

If the aircon refrigerant circuit leaks as much as you say then you will lose all the refrigerant not just some.

How are you determining that you are losing refrigerant?

That means it's not chilling. Refrigerant loss is just one possibility.

If you have a freon leak, it will not drain out. It will evaporate. So I believe what you're seeing on your driveway is water from the condenser drain. And if you don't have a leak and you keep adding freon, you'll think you have a leak, because an overcharged system will not cool. And if it' s antifreeze coolant you see on the driveway behind the engine; its probably a freeze plug. I'm just sayin...

Correction: in the discussion i said "condensor". What i should have said was; "Evaporator" cooling core. Sorry. If the humidity is high it will accumulate quite a bit of water.

there should be a drain hose that runs from the ac evaporator box through the inter fender. it can get clogged with mud.

pressure spray the cowl vent and inner fender. the drain should be on the passenger side. that should open the drain hose

Why do you think your freon is leaking? Freon escapes as a gas that you can not see. There is oil mixed with the freon that might be visable. Your first step is to find that coolant leak. Your car has at least two heater hoses in that area that pass coolant through the firewall. These hoses are not easy to see , and are often neglected until a problem shows up. Get your hands dirty, and look for coolant stains or leaks on ALL of the coolant hoses. If you cannot find any signs of leakage, pay to have the cooling systen pressure tested. Do you smell any thing strange when the fan is running inside the car? If the heater core is leaking, the coolant leaking will remain inside the plastic heater assembly until it can find a place to drain from. This can be the condensation drain, or a seam in the plastic heater box. Is the rug on the floor wet under the front passenger's feet? Or, parking on the hill might bring the coolat that leaked out of the heater closer to the condensate drain, allowing it to leak to the ground. Good luck. Not all coolant leaks are expensive to fix.

Ok, two totally unrelated problems guy. My suggestion is fix the coolant leak first. Having no AC will not blow your engine. Having no coolant will.

The leak occurs when parked in a certain attitude? leaking head gasket / cracked head /leaking freezeplug / cracked block. assorted hose fittings etc. Back side of engine, up under everything, where you really can't see, is where I would start too.

Noted in an earlier post that Chrysler put a bolt on with gasket cast aluminum water passage on the bottom of the intake manifold on many of their 4 cylinder engines. Talk about a real bear of a leak to locate and impossible to fix without removing the intake manifold. Fun Fun!

Your post title says Z24...so I assume you are talking about the "Ignominious Chevrolet Cavalier".

All of these cars eventually bleed out...

Watch for oil, power steering, brake, and headlight fluid as well.

Any elevation above Hell is when they start losing their fluids.
