Over Current Check

09/12/2012 1:45 PM

Sir,

I want to check a panel that always tripping due to over current. kindly tell me how to check the actual current passing through which triggered my ckt breaker to trip. by using multimeter.

Thanks.

Depending how much current is passing through the circuit, a multimeter probably doesn't have the capacity. You should know this by consulting the operator's manual.

It will also tell you how to check the circuit.

Use a meter with a clamping amp probe. Follow the directions on the meter.

Or, ask someone who is in the same room with you, so they will have sufficient information to teach you.

Circuit breakers can trip from over-current or heat...Use a clamp-on amp meter to check for over-current, as stated above, and if current is within circuit limits, then use an infrared temp instrument to check temperature at lugs...

Yes, GA.

If the OP doesn't know how set up a multimeter or other device to measure current then they should not be trying to to do this kind of a test. The life you save may be your own child.

He'd not even qualify as an electricians assistant in this country. I wonder if there's a Darwin Awards for unqualified people who do their own electrical work?

Generally in rainy seasons, the dust accumulated on the connectors and terminals absorb moisture and get shorted raising false alarms. This too should be checked in addition to assessing the through current using clamp-on ammeter.

at first u hav to check the settings of circuit breaker, then u hav to confirm that...what is the actual value of circuit breaking current of CB, apply the clamp-on meter for check the current in that circuit, and here u doesnot mention the voltage level...it may be either low/high voltage circuit.

Use a power analyser or datalogger to record the variation of I,V,pf,W etc and check from the graph at the instant of tripping.

Come on mate! The OP can't operate a multimeter and you are suggesting a power analyser?

Re: Over Current Check

please mention clearly the tripping switchgear rating & connected load etc., using multi meter u cant able to measure the current, u need a clamp meter/tong tester to measure and also its impossible to measure instantaneous current/tripping current by clamp meter, normally it will exists micro seconds. please chek the over current setting in your switchgear, normally it will be in % x In. ensure there is no fault in load side.

"Anonymous Poster" should not be allowed for initial posts. I think this would deter these type of questions.

I think Lyn does this to spark discourse...not really

I doubt if your multimeter has the speed to capture that transient (most of them average the data to get a stable reading).

Use a scope with an external trigger which would be fired by your ckt breaker. The scope needs to be set up to capture mostly pre-trigger data so you can see exactly what happened to the current before the breaker tripped.
