KOH vs Chrome Plated Brass

09/14/2012 7:49 AM

Does anyone have any idea how chemically compatible KOH and Chrome Plated Brass is. I know KOH and Brass is not ideal, but not sure if it is chrome plated. Any ideas?

If the chrome plating gets damaged by assembly/disassembly, or the pipe or fitting threads get chipped on assembly... KOH and Zn simply do not play well together.

Sort of dicey.

I'll ask the standard questions... how much material, how often and for what anticipated duration, any particular reason you wish to use chromed brass...

Very miniscual amounts of KOH. If any will get on the Turck Inductive Sensor possibilities of the KOH being crystallized before it makes contact with it is very likely.

Thank you for your help.

I'd use 316 corrosion resistant steel.

We happen to have the chrome plated sensors here in stock at the plant.

Try one and see how long it lasts.

"Very miniscule amounts"- and also it could crystalize...

if you are saying there will be extremely limited exposure to a concentrated soulution, and the rest of the time it will not be used at all or will be exposed to totally compatible fluids, my experience is you will likely be fine. As long there is no possibility of product hangup in the part in question. Otherwise any SS or even black iron are a better choice.

You don't happen to work in Asheboro by any chance? Although I am sure KOH is used in lots of processes, batteries are the first to come to mind.

Nickle plating is used on copper cell links with KOH batteries, it has to be perfect as a microscopic hole in the plating would cause rapid corrosion,

Nickle [ as it is a base for chrome plating ]on brass would work with the above caveat's, but stainless steel or plain steel would work OK.

There is always a risk of pinpoint porosity with chrome platings (look at how the rust appears on your classic chrome bumper, after some years!), and in such an instance KOH could be rapidly destructive to the brass substrate. I can't see any reason (commercial or technical) for using chrome-plated brass over 316ss, or even 304ss on such an application.
