If I post anonym, how anonym is anonym?

I can not see the anonym posts I have done in my profile, but maybe admin can.

Is it desirable that anonym posts can be tracked back to the poster at some point? (other than social engineering)

Or not!

What is your taking on this?

posting anonym of course!

I think that Admin can backtrack them. There have been unruly anonymous posters who got banned.

If you post anonymously, basically then you can't find your own butt with both hands, such as if you want to edit the post.

As I understand it, you can be logged in and choose to post "anon" but this is traced in your profile and of course admin has access to this. All the rest of us though see it as "anon".

You can also log in on another computer and put a post into the forum (not logged in as registered user) and the post will be "anon" unless you actually log in. In those cases, the post would not show in your personal lists and admin would (probably) only be able to trace back to the machine ID.

I've done both in the past and that seems to be the way it works form a user perspective. I'm only guessing what admin have access to.

"You can also log in on another computer and put a post into the forum (not logged in as registered user) ..." - are you describing 'Guest ' posting? If so, this was banned some time back. Guests (or registered users who hadn't logged in) used to appear as "Anonymous poster", but those days are gone. A registered, logged in, user can post anonymously, but now they appear as "Anonymous poster #1" or " ... #2" etc.

I liked when they were called "Anonymous Coward". So much more evocative!

The whole point of an username is that it conceals the full identity of the poster while enabling patterns to be established.

I agree with Tornado, the Admin can backtrack them. But don't worry, that won't cause your butt to lurk all over you, that would be a serius ailment that might affect not only your social life but your health too; so don't be affraid to post anonymously once on a while, your butt is pretty safe and well located.
