Boiler Classification on the Basis of Temperature and Pressure

Mentioning three Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion (CFBC)Boilers of same capacity having different Temperatures and Pressures

1. High Temperature and Pressure CFBC

Steam generating Capacity : 130 t/h

Rated Evaporation pressure : 9.8 Mpa (1421.36 Psig, 98 Bar)

Rated Evaporation temperature : 540 C

2.High Temperature and Pressure CFBC

Steam generating Capacity : 130 t/h

Rated Evaporation pressure : 8.43 Mpa (1222.6 Psig, 84.33 Bar)

Rated Evaporation temperature : 515 C

3.Medium Temperature and Pressure CFBC

Steam generating Capacity : 130 t/h (2 x 65 t/h)

Rated Evaporation pressure : 3.82 Mpa (554.044 Psig, 38.39 Bar)

Rated Evaporation temperature : 450 C

a.At what temperature and Pressure Limits, the Boiler is classified whetehr it is Low temperature & Pressure,Medium temperature & Pressure or High Temperature & Pressure ?

b.Which one among these three Boiler is more efficeint (interms of Operation and maintenance etc)?

I doubt that there is a universal classification for this. Instead, you might need to look in the glossary that should be part of whatever local Code.

You must be going for a co-generation power project 25 mw or near about with one steam turbine on #1 & 2 and option two steam turbines on #3. It is but obvious, that # 1 & 2 will need much less steam/kwh (maybe 3.2 ~ 3.5 kg/kwh) by the steam turbine than # 3 (maybe 4.2~5.5 kg/kwh) with no option for standby. Much higher exorbitant price because of such high pressure but with long run payback opportunities. Disadvantage is electrical kwh variation load control on low electrical requirement. On the contrary, apart from more steam kg/kw with # 3 it has advantages of better control with 2 option. The cost kwh will be higher compared to # 1 & 2 but you will never be running full load and your electrical load will vary which you can adjust between operation of 2 boilers instead 1 boiler. Lower cost of boiler and steam turbines.

Irrespective any Boiler/s you need an EPC to undertake the Project here in pakistan who is authorized by their Government.

Classification of boilers as per ASME code is just low pressure and high pressure. Section IV - Low pressure upto 15 psi and below. High pressure Section I > 15 psi. This then does not leave an option for medium pressure.

They are then divided into sub critical and super critical. Your boilers come under sub critical because > 221.5 bar and 565C is a super critical.

# 3 have following configration

Two Boilers each of 65 t/h,

One Unit of Condensing steam Turbine

One Unit of Generator

Yes I know that is why I answered. your cost will come Rs. 12.50/kwh.

You have not informed if you have any use of steam for process. With 2 sets condensing it is presumed you need no steam else extraction turbine x 1 set. The steam credit would have made your cost Rs. 8/kwh. All cost on imported coal 6200 kcal and 1 % sulphur.

a. At what temperature and Pressure Limits, the Boiler is classified wheteher it is Low temperature & Pressure,Medium temperature & Pressure or High Temperature & Pressure ?

As per ASME code, Boilers are classified into two basic classes

i. Low Pressure Boiler: Pressure is below 15 Psi

ii. High Pressure Boiler: Pressure is above 15 Psi.

High Pressure Boilers are further classified in to Sub Critical, Super critical and Ultra Super Critical

1. Sub-Critical (Operated around 19 Mpa):

Example: 170 bar, 540 C, Efficiency: 38 %

2. Super-Critical (Operated above 22.1 Mpa):

Example: 250 bar, 600/615 C, Efficiency: 42 %

3. Ultra Super-Critical:

Example: 300 bar, 615/630 C, Efficiency: 44 %

i. Steam in Kg / kWh around 3.9 to 4.0 at 6000 kcal / kg of Coal with 1 % Sulphur

ii. Net Thermal Efficiency of around 24 %

iii. Have high Cost of Boiler and Turbine due to high pressure

iv. Have long pay back opportunities

2. 25 MW Power Plants Using Boiler - 3

i. Steam in Kg / kWh around 4.5 to 5.0 at 6000 kcal / kg of Coal with 1 % Sulphur

ii. Net Thermal Efficiency around 22.5 to 22.8 %

iii. Have low Cost of Boiler and Turbine due to low pressure

iv. Better control over low electrical load equipments

v. Low initial Cost
