Coil Connection

10/17/2012 7:56 AM

if both ends of a coil connected to two different phases of supply say R and Y.Then what will be the result?

You will get 1.73 times the line-to-neutral voltage applied across it.

...and the result will depend upon the voltage between the phases and the voltage rating of the coil, neither of which have been shared with the forum.

Let's play his game and see how many useless yet true statements we can make from the useless and incomplete information.

3. You will have a completed circuit.

4. Current will flow from R to Y, then from Y to R, changing direction at a rate commensurate with the supply frequency.

5. The B phase may feel left out? Just think of all those poor little electrons, wandering about with no-one to love them.

You will have an unbalanced load applied to your three phase power source.

Tonight's homework assignment will be in two parts:

  1. Calculate the current flow through R and Y. Make sure to identify the direction of your current direction in your analysis schematic. Current results must be shown in both imaginary and angular measurements.
  2. Can one construct a load between B and N using just a resistor and capacitor to make a balanced load for the three phase power source? Can this balanced load appear to be purely resistive to the three phase voltage source?

As usual show all steps in analysis or no credit will be given.

Hint: Include parasitic resistance RL of this coil in your analysis. Assume that the core of your inductor will not saturate. Extra credit will be given for a saturated core analysis.

6. Be sure to calculate time to failure due to resistance heating of the coil, using the voltage of your choice. Show your work.

Unless the coil is designed for the voltage between R and Y...

8. The coil will create a magnetic field.
