Supply Connection of Coil

10/17/2012 8:13 AM

if two different phases (say R and B) apply across two terminals of a coil, then will it exist or burn-out? if any one of these two then please explain.

If the rated voltage of the coil is below the phase-to-phase voltage, then both things will happen: It will exist and then it will burn out.

Or, from the coil's point of view: I burn out, therefore I exist.

...so it all depends upon the voltage between the phases and the voltage rating of the coil, neither of which have been shared with the forum.

A KrisDelTM infinite impedance coil will be fine. Mind I can't find any in stors so their existence is debatable. I think Kris used the only one as a paperweight.

If it's a 220v coil, it will work....

It will still exist even if it's burnt out.

A bit smelly though.

It depends on the coil's rated voltage.

Do you know what the difference between "phase to phase" and "phase to neutral" voltage is, as this will answer your question.

Hint: operating a coil off two different phases is possible as long as the coil is rated for the increased voltage.

if this is a reactor core you must not exceed the voltage and you must match the frequency requirements. A240vac 60Hz coil may still burn out on a50Hz system. As a reactive element it can have all sorts of adverse affects if it is applied improperly.

You haven't given us much to go on. Many years ago it was common to see the control circuit for a motor circuit to be derived from 2 of the 3 phases. On a 415V three phase circuit you would have 415 across the coil. As long as the coil is rated for that voltage it will ok. This was not a safe way to worl and it was abandoned years ago for 110V control.
