Interesting Roof Structures

10/25/2012 2:42 PM

I am an undergraduate student studying towards an MEng degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Glasgow. As part of my 4th year dissertation I am looking into roof structures in particular where a roof has been added to pre-existing buildings to cover a public space. The reason for this is to asses options for putting a roof over Buchanan Street in Glasgow (a popular shopping location in Glasgow's city centre).

I have found one example of such a project in the Victoria Quarter in Leeds along with a few others however I was wondering if anybody knew if any similar pieces of engineering existed anywhere else in the world. Also of interest to me are any interesting/innovative roof systems in general or any good texts relating to roof systems.

Thanks in advance for any replies it would help my studies greatly.

If I understand your request correctly, the Fremont Street Experience in Las Vegas Nevada USA should be of some interest.

There are many YouTube videos of this interesting feature.

Thank you for the prompt reply!

This is exactly the type of structure I am looking for and I will now begin to research it thoroughly.

The reply is most appreciated and any other ideas are most welcome.

Mall of America - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

At 390,000 m2 it may be interesting.

It's not a street, but as I understand it the atrium at the British Museum in London used to be open, and is now enclosed under a large roof.

Likewise at the Cleveland (Ohio) Museum of Art they've roofed-over a large formerly open space.

I was aware of the roof in the Courtyard of the British Museum but was unaware of the Cleveland Museum of Art and will now research this structure.

Thank you for the suggestions.

Hi Andrew,

Do a google image search for the following:

Santiago Calatrava roof structure

Santiago Calatrava is the boss of beautiful civil design - he's an architect and engineer and some of his structures are simply extraordinary.

A slightly more mundane, but still interesting mall roof is this one in Hobart (one view of it here - you can find several others online):

Good luck with your MEng

In Buxton in derbyshire stables were built witha circular exercise ring in the middle. This was later roofed over with a glass dome and the building turned into a hospital. The devonshire royal hospital. It is now part of the university of derby:they are sure to have some pictures.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Devonshire-Royal-Hospital-Buxton-R-P-/221143125984?pt=UK_Collectables_Postcards_MJ&hash=item337d284fe0

I have been in it. at the focus your own words echo back, and at random points around you can hear conversations in other areas.

Denver International Airport would definitely qualify as an interesting/innovative roof system.
