Tiny V-12 Engine

11/12/2012 11:25 AM

Hi to all,

A friend just sent this video to me, and I am totally amazed. The craftsmanship is wonderful. As far as I can see, there was no CNC work done here, only excellent lathe, drill press, and hand work to create this marvel.

From what I can read, it took over 1200 hours to make and assemble the 261 pieces!

(if only I had such patience )

Kind regards,

Very impressive work. Thanks for sharing this.

It appears that combustion is not happening inside this tiny engine since ignition is not included. None the less this is a spectacular build.

That's a work of art!

I'm impressed by the chip curls coming off the cutting tools.

I think you will find that Stephen Gasparin makes an even smaller V-12 than this. All Gasparin's engines are CO2 powered. He has made all types of multi-cylinder engines, including radials for many years. A truly remarkable engineer. See following link for his V-12 in action:

and:

Best regards!

I could not make one thats for sure, but this one you mentioned has no ignition and only runs on air....

I don't know if this example is as small as the one you mentioned, but it does actually run!!!

That for me is even more impressive as they run, are made for selling and get built into scale models. The company is in Germany and they make air and water cooled versions, it even has a supercharger (what was used to get extra air/fuel into an engine before Turbo chargers).

It was modeled on the Rolls-Royce Merlin engines of WWII fame.

The online English translations are pretty bad and the website could be improved as well:-

This a YouTube link of the same engines:-

The brother in law has one in the USA:-

This one is also amazing:-

I hope this was interesting for you.

Hi AG, Awesome site and engines! For me it doesn't detract from the craftsmanship of the OP, but that these are fully operational is wonderful engineering. I WANT ONE. It makes me wonder what are the limits. Kind regards .....

I agree entirely. I did not look at the price tag as it will be far beyond me....

An amazing example or workmanship! I noticed that there were no gaskets included...just great tolerance control!

Beautiful work!!

Reminds me of when I was a machinist at NASA Langley. The shop I worked in was tasked with seeing how small a diesel engine we could come up with.

IIRC, the smallest was about a 1/4" from crankcase bottom to cylinder head top. Anything smaller and the fuel intake port was simply too small for fuel molecules to enter.
