Graphs For Design Of Water Cooling Towers

12/05/2012 5:45 AM

Do you know of any graphs for the design of water cooling towers? I have been googling for two days and I get a lot of info about how cooling towers are built, but very little on calculation. Also, I have heard there are graphs that simplify the design process, but couldn't find any.

Well, Kempe's Engineers' Yearbook, and Perry, "The Chemical Engineer's Handbook", any edition of either, would be a good starting point as all the information needed is listed therein.

Remember books made from paper? These particular apps contain information that cannot be found on the world wide wait and don't need electricity like telephones and computers.

Interesting, I'm sizing out cooling towers right now.

What are you looking at.

  • The design of the Structure and/or the cooling cell itself.
  • Or for sizing for a process such as total heat rejection and GPM.

If its the later, which is what I'm doing. I use a program called Applied flow Technologies, to assist in calculating Head and pressure drop throughout the system.

If its the former, as mentioned earlier "Perry's Chemical Engineer's Handbook", has some good info on this.

I would do both things. Will try to find that software.

This more of a structural engineering issue. Are we talking about the massive reinforced concrete cooling towers usually found at nuclear, NG, and coal-fired plants, right?

Those towers usually employ a hyperbolic curve along their wall cross-section, top to bottom. The design of these towers is most often proprietary.....design done by the likes of Bechtel in-house engineering staff, etc.

You usually need to employ a 3D FEA software platform to design one of them, but it can be done by hand calculation (very time consuming).

No, no. no. Just small cooling towers, like for a large air conditioning system.

I have been dealing with Marley, now SPX Technologies, there are others. but my discussins with them have been very informative.

Why not just call the manufacturer of the chiller, or DX system you are installing and ask them for the tonnage you require. Match the tower to the equipment and there you go. Most of the manufactures will give you the GPM your condensers will need then just take in the ambient considerations and pipe accordingly. If its is a small system 100 tons down why not just use a fluid cooler.

I agree with Fredski, BAC are great towers for service and parts accessibility in the long run.

I already downloaded an excellent manual by SPX. Will check BAC too. Thanks.

There is lots of information here:

http://www.google.com/search?q=Water+Cooling+Tower+images&hl=en&tbo=u&tbm=isch&source=univ&sa=X&ei=OcW_UOmSN4yi8gTB9YDYBQ&ved=0CDoQsAQ&biw=1024&bih=665

Scan the pictures until you see one that looks interesting, click on the image, when the link comes up delete the image and read the information.
