Sorry; but if you are referring to the U.S. you are grossly incorrect. We are not prosperous because others are poor. There is no dominance required to maintain our position. It is the result of a free market. China, on the other hand, is trying to win the industrial revolution by breaking the backs of their own citizens. Hardly a comparison to the US style of living. You should try living here in the US. If you already live here then I feel sorry for your distorted view of the country's philosophy-You need to look at our living style in the context of all humans throughout the world, then comment.

Purging it's search results are as dangerous as handing them over to the Fed's. This filtering is censorship. The censorship in this case is inhibiting the spread of free ideas and in turn freedom. Technically it is assisting to prop up an inferior and inhumane form of government. If what you say is true then Google should be ashamed. Perhaps if Google would stand their ground the Chinese govt would be forced to deal with it a better way. Heck they might stop pirating our operating systems.

I say not a far leap since both are simply capitulations to government.

Google is a business with a valuable resource it can sell. I was going to say it's only a question of 'when' not 'if' they sell individuals tracking records , but I suspect we are already there. The only issue is how data is cross-linked and who it is sold to. Such actions can be for the good of individuals and the population as a whole , but can also be used otherwise. A potential employer might willingly pay for a google profile. eg too many health related searches and you may be a liability. Too much fantasy stuff and you may be a weirdo ,Too much legal stuff and you may be a trouble maker. etc

Google decision to play ball with the Chinese demands must surely be a commercial one , based on the company's overall ability to generate money by doing so. People worry about identity theft in the context of their bank account. Damage to a cyber ID will be the next big thing.

I think Google is already dictating what you are seeing. Have you noticed how the same links repeatedly show up say every 10th or 25th time ( always on the top of the page.) I know that there is things you can do to make your home page move up in the rankings, but how do you make them show up on the top of every page?

Even following all the tips of how to increase your ratings, and being the only one selling an original one of a kind, I cannot get my web page to display high in the search results.

Yes, you are right, but I view Google as a "yellow pages" (a standard phone directory for business) I expect the 'paid' links to be the most offered- and Google to have levels of 'visibility' for it's paying customers. As far as your results, using Google, they do have a 'preference' page allowing you to further customise search results and perhaps get Canada listing's first. You will be trading some minor privacy items for better results.

What I do not like, is Google blocking a user from seeing a link purely for political reasons. If I paid to have my site listed at the world wide level then it should be listed. Let each country's govt write their own laws as to which links can/cannot be 'clicked' This is already standard practice and it puts the enforcement responsibilities on the ones choosing the censoring.

If Google keeps submitting to outside govt censorship I feel they will regret it in the future because the demands will only continue to grow.
