Can Anybody Identify an Old Board Game?

12/30/2012 7:54 AM

It might not even be a board game as such. "Jay Walking", seen in a museum called Yesterday's World (anything and everything over the last 100 years or so). No detail available at the place, and the picture is not great (the stuff was in a small room behind glass). The similarity of the boxing for the game on the right of the second picture (looks to be called Yacht Racing Game, which might be made by McLoughlin) may be a clue.

I've been unable to find any clue at all.

Is it some sort of dance based game ? A 1940's variant of Twister ? The phrase 'Jay-walking' is not even a Brit one as far as I know.

Just as a by-the-by, did anybody else get out boardgames over the hols ? Bit hard to drag kids away from gadgets thesedays, but I get fair moist over such things where all the family join in. Games such as 'Risk' and 'Mine a Million' are great fun - bankrupting people by pressganging them into a barge, or destroying their empires - but Scrabble is the usual within the houise of Squirrel (only because it has no apostrophes ).

GA to anybody who can identify the game, and a herd of Kudos to anybody who has played or owns it. Gratuitous GA's for nostalgic and amusing stories of retro stuff.

Should be Duck Walking, not Jay Walking.

It's how we spot undercover agents from LynDoor trying to sneak into KrisDel research labs.

Not much out there on this one, It's from the 1940's, and Jay Walking was manufactured by Glevum Games. I found one in an auction lot #2827 :

The link didn't directly get me home, but you seem to be on track. Bit late here, but standby for some much appreciated adulation. Nice work.

From the pic, I'm wondering of it's a board games version of "What's the Time Mr Wolf".

Difficult to play board games on one' own. Of course, I could have played online backgammon....but I'm not playing postal anything with the squibble - couldn't trust him!

Me neither! You never know what he's gonna do next - or what he's already done. (For my part, I take the extra precaution of autoclaving these pixels before they get to the screen, because you just never know where they've been)

Oh, and did you catch the hidden message in The Squibble's pic up top? Gawd I'm glad the Admins haven't caught on. Such filth!

Hey, I wear surgical gloves, gown and mask when playing. I also do so when playing Scrabble.

I recently re-discovered Boggle. Not exactly a board game, but you can play it solo. Son managed to trash all the others playing. Possibly because we all nearly passed out when he got a 10 letter word.

How about a game of Kitten Robot ? You get Smartie tubes, one on each leg, then see which one can beat John Cleese for funny walks.

You've been watching reruns of QI Series B haven't you? That nasty Mr Carr. I'd like to but some giant smartie tubes on his arms and legs....

The Kudos are being lined up right now - very impressive research.

I'm now even more baffled. The box in your earlier link is considerably bigger than the one I initially posted. What on earth is in that thing ?!

The game looks to be something you place on the floor. Beyond that I have no idea.

I can't explain why, but this game is becoming an obsession. The artwork is brilliant, and I am lusting to know what is in the box and how it's played. My chums in the antique/retro trade are all on hols right now, but come the New Year I will be pestering them all to try find out more.

Many thanks for you time and efforts. Only on CR4 could I have found some quality feedback on such an odd question. The Kudos will remain well fed whilst I investigate further. I don't do New Year resolutions, but I do like a challenge. Before 2013 is out, I intend to be playing this game with an original set.

I wonder if it's a precursor to Twister®.

The thought had crossed my mind (double-check the initial post). It looked to be a board game, but subsequent posts have revealed it to be in a fairly large box. The artwork looks (to me) a bit 1940's. The motion of the characters is a bit jazz/doo-wop. It also has a cross-atlantic feel to it.

Check out the other posts, and you'll see we have a contender for a herd of Kudo's. Still in quarantine at Heathrow pending some more input - some of CR4's venerable older members may be busy over the holiday season, so I'm considering it pending for a few weeks yet.

The lucky winner will get a hand-written postcards from Etherville. Runners-up will get two. For security, all entries must PM me the address of nearest bar plus whatever name they are known by.

Here you go: get your bid(s) in and you can be playing it by the end of the month:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fun-Vintage-Game-1940s-Jay-Walking-Glevum-Games-Made-England-No-Reserve-/190780237269?pt=UK_Toys_Creative_Educational_RL&hash=item2c6b6365d5

  • Quote:Box a bit tatty at the sides, with some other minor and inevitable signs of wear and use, plus one of the red balls we think is replaced. Otherwise fair to good condtion for such an old game.

HAHA! Now I can see how you play it! False feet under your shoes, balls on the toes of the false feet, who keeps them on land puts them in the box wins !

Woof - I'm impressed/embossed/awed !

I think I see how it's played. The price is quite tempting (though I'm a bit iffy about the prospect of used balls !). Do you prefer kudos, or shall I just promise to stop playing evil games with kittens ?

***-off, it's cheaper to buy the game and those kudos !

You have my undying respect for most excellent research. That does not mean you get to play first.
